Biafra: Traders close shops in some parts of Port Harcourt

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) had declared a May 30 a public holiday for their supporters to commemorate 50 years of the declaration of the secessionist state of Biafra.
They also said they wanted to remember those who died in the Nigerian civil war fought between Nigerian troops and rebel Biafra forces.
A check around the city showed that major business areas, especially those dominated by Igbo traders, were shut down.
Some traders who were seen around their business premises said they came to monitor the situation and not to open for business.
Some normally very busy roads, such as the Port Harcourt/Aba expressway, Ikwerre Road and the East/West Roads witnessed light traffic.
Meanwhile, some traders at the Building Material Market and the Nkpolu Oro-worukwo Shopping Centre, Mile Three Diobu, Port Harcourt, expressed support for the groups’ call.
Chief Ike Nwaugo, a trader said that the market union had given a directive stopping traders from opening their shops for business during the holiday.
“Nobody will open for business today; it is a directive even from the union in compliance with the call by the agitators of Biafra,’’ he said.
A trader at the Oyigbo Truck Park, Mr Ignatius Okorie, said that the holiday declared in honour of Biafra was responsible for the low economic activity in the area.
“Many people are at home, economic activities are at a very low ebb, the call for holiday is the cause of all these,’’ he said.
However, a lawyer, Mr Chijokwu Wombu, has criticised the observance of the holiday by some traders in Port Harcourt, saying, “ it is of no meaning.’’
He said the traders staying at home in adherence to the declaration of holiday did not make Rivers part of Biafra.
“I see the whole thing as mere showmanship, the traders merely pretend to have closed shops, but they are all milling around the business premises.
“I tell you that they are in business, just go close and ask for something, you will be surprised that they will sell to you, people should stop being deceptive,’’ he said.

Army denies shooting IPOB members

The Nigerian Army, yesterday, denied the alleged shooting to death of Biafran secessionists who want to break away from Nigeria and form an Independent State of Biafra.

A statement by Colonel Sagir Musa, the Deputy Director, Public Relations, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army said: “The attention of 82 Division, Nigerian Army, has been drawn to another allegation made by IPOB in a statement the group released at about 1645 hours on May 29, 2017, that there were sporadic shootings by the Army in Aba and Umuahia axis and that soldiers opened fire on its (IPOB) members in Aba during a procession in honour of those who died during the Biafra civil war.

“The Division wishes to state that there was no soldier at the venue or vicinity where the procession took place. Also, there was no crisis or breakdown of law and order in Aba, Umuahia and in the whole of South Eastern part of Nigeria as to warrant/justify “use of firearms’ as falsely and mischievously alleged by IPOB propagandists.”

“What is obvious, however, is an increase in the presence of security agencies on routine patrols in different locations in the region, particularly areas that are regarded as real or potential flash points. The aim is to pro actively checkmate possible security breaches in view of sordid/divisive utterances and in some cases blatant actions by secessionist agitators,” he added.

Two years of APC: Buhari should return our economy to 2015 level — Senator Bassey

HAS the APC Federal Government done well after two years?

Well, they have tried their best, let me put it that way. But I think that Nigerians want a bit more than that, so far, they have done their best, but they need to do much more because Nigerians voted for more and deserved more and the APC promised more. So, I don’t think they have met the expectations of Nigerians.
How do you compare the performance of the APC to that of the last PDP administration after two years?

Well, look, APC inherited the largest economy in Africa, today we are no longer the largest economy in Africa. You can give whatever reasons that you like, but it is incumbent on the APC to ensure with all its election promises that we return and surpass the level we are now.
Are you insinuating that APC has shrunk the fortune of the economy of the country?

Of course. Have you not seen it? Are we not in a recession? The economy that the APC met has shrunk. It is not as large as it was when the APC met it. I have seen their recovery plan, so, I expect that the APC has to do everything in their power, to ensure that they return Nigeria to be the largest economy in Africa. I don’t want to go into details. They were bequeathed with a large economy; they should return us not the same size but the largest economy in Africa, it should be even bigger than the one they met.
What do you think was responsible for the recession in the country?

I think it is self-inflicted. I think that there are mistakes we made in the management of our economy by this administration. The previous administration left the largest economy in Africa even with all the problems that we have identified in the previous administration, they still left Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa with all the problems. Now, this present government says it doesn’t have those same problems, and yet the economy is shrinking. So, they need to do something to return us to our former level.
Given the problems facing the PDP, do you think the party can return to power?

Oh yes. Look I don’t think it is about PDP or APC. I think at this point of our history, it is about Nigeria and we need to say look, what are we going to do to put Nigeria back to the pedestal where it used to be. That is what we are going to do, and it is across party lines. We need to sit down as a political class and look at how we are going to move our country forward, that is the real issue.
I am still a PDP member and whenever I go to my constituency and call for meeting everywhere will be full that shows that PDP is alive and well. If any of my colleagues in the PDP goes home and calls a meeting in his constituency, the hall will be full. So, the PDP is still alive and kicking.
PDP is alive and well because, at the grassroots, the party still has tremendous support. Yes, there are issues at the leadership level, that is, at the national leadership level because in my state (Cross River) the party is intact.
Is PDP not living on past glory?

No, I don’t think so. I think our glory is current.
Even with the spate of defections to the APC?

No, I don’t think so. I think it is just very few persons that have gone to the APC, but there have also been people that have crossed from the APC to the PDP.
What is responsible for the defections?

Well, you know all politics is local and in a lot of situations, it is because of the local politics of whichever area the person is defecting from.
But apart from maybe Senator John Owan Enoh, others that have defected are not going to change the fortunes of the party in any way.
But former Senator Florence Ita-Giwa was among the people that defected recently, will that not affect the party in the next elections?

No, Senator Florence has not been very active recently. I think she has been more involved in other issues; I am not sure she has been so active on the ground. Apart from John Owan Enoh as I said, I don’t see much effect from others that have defected.
Are you saying that the defection of Senator John Owan Enoh to the APC will affect the PDP in the next elections?

Well, I think that John Owan Enoh has some followership in the state and so we see him as a loss to the PDP. But like I said, even from his local government, others have moved from the APC to the PDP. So, there is a net effect which in the end probably might balance that.
When do you plan to defect to the ruling APC?

How? Based on what? I am not that type of politician; I don’t play my politics like that. I am a founding member of the PDP, and I am with the PDP through and through, and I have no reason to go to any other party.
It is alleged that multi-national oil companies induced members of the National Assembly on the PIB, and that is why there was a delay in its passage?

I am not aware of such an attempt. More so the governance bill is really about us in Nigeria getting our act together, it doesn’t have anything to do with the international oil companies.
All the players in the sector including the international oil companies will have a better environment in which to operate when the PIB is passed but its passage now really does not have anything to do with them.

PDP shuns probe into killing of 50 Rivers residents –NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission says the Peoples Democratic Party’ s leaders , accused of orchestrating violence in the Ogba /Egbema /Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State before , during and after the 2015 general elections , have turned down its invitations to an ongoing investigation into the violence.
No fewer than 50 persons reportedly lost their lives to the mayhem that engulfed the area before, during and after the 2015 polls.
The commission is currently investigating about 153 petitions on hate speeches and election -related violence which occurred in the various parts of the country in relation to the 2015 general elections .
About 23 of the 153 petitions were sent by persons linked to the All Progressives Congress in ONELGA.
The APC members , led by the then Chairman of ONELGA , Mr . Austine Ahiamadu , alleged wanton loss of relatives and properties to violence allegedly orchestrated by the PDP leaders during and after the 2015 general elections .
The commission on May 9, 2017, began an investigation into the allegations made by the APC members .
Speaking with one of our correspondents, the investigation’ s Project Coordinator and Director , Monitoring, NHRC, Mr . Tony Ojukwu, said while the petitioners attended the preliminary hearing, the PDP leaders , whose names were mentioned in the petitions , turned down its invitations.
Ojukwu stated , “ The Rivers State petitions are not the only petitions we are investigating ; there are 153 of them .
“ Everybody concerned in the Rivers State petitions were invited. The petitioners were here ( Abuja ) for the preliminary hearing but those accused of the various allegations did not honour our invitations. ”
He explained that the investigation was at the stage of analysing the oral and documentary evidence submitted during the preliminary hearing.
Ojukwu said , “ The failure of anybody invited to attend our hearing will not stop the statutory duties of the commission.
“ Right now , we are at the stage of evaluating and analysing what we got during the preliminary hearing because we have to be sure there are cogent issues to investigate further.
“ If we find out that there are cogent issues that the petitioners can substantiate at the end of the day, we will conduct a public hearing and whoever is invited and fails to attend it must be ready with the findings of the commission at the end of the day.
“ Fair hearing only requires giving an opportunity to the person accused to say his or her own side of the story . ”
The director added that his team had visited the various parts of the country for the preliminary hearing but chose to conduct hearing with respect to Rivers State at its headquarters in Abuja for security reasons.
When contacted by one of our correspondents on Sunday , the Chairman of the PDP in Rivers State , Mr . Felix Obuah , who was accused of engaging a gang to annihilate opposition members in ONELGA , said he was not aware of any invitation by the NHRC.
“ I am not aware of what you are talking about . Nobody invited me, ” Obuah told The PUNCH on the telephone .
The petitioners accused Obuah , who hails from Omoku in ONELGA, of recruiting criminal gangs that allegedly perpetrated the violence leading to the death of over 50 persons and wanton destruction of properties in the area.
The then Executive Chairman of the Ogba /Egbema /Ndoni LGA, Mr . Austin Ahiamadu , titled his petition to the NHRC ‘ Memorandum on the mass murder of over 50 citizens and the occupation of the Ogba /Egbema /Ndoni Local Government Area ( ONELGA ) of Rivers State by Ejima Charles Igwedibia ( aka Don Wani) led killer gangs under the command of Mr . Felix Obuah ’ .
His petition dated July 5, 2015, read in part, “ I am the Chairman of the Ogba /Egbema /Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State and petition your esteemed commission as the chief security officer of my local government area to intervene and halt and bring to justice the persons responsible for the ongoing mass killings of over 50 innocent citizens and the occupation of the area by murderous criminals who have effectively taken over the area and are still killing under the direction of Mr . Felix Obuah , the Rivers State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party. ”
Alleged picture of Igwedibia , donning a full military camouflage and his “ lieutenants ” standing behind him was hung by the petitioners in the auditorium where the preliminary hearing held on May 9 and 10, 2017.
Flyers showing pictures of bodies killed and properties destroyed in the violence were distributed by the petitioners .
Large banners , which were enlarged sizes of the flyers , were hung at the auditorium.
A woman , Mrs . Patience Anube, broke down in tears while recounting how her husband , Chief Christopher Anube, her two sons and her daughter were murdered in their family home in Obrikom town, ONELGA , on April 3, 2015, barely one week to the 2015 governorship election in Rivers State .
The incident was among those captured in Ahiamadu ’ s petition to the NHRC.
In total , seven members of the household died after their assailants fired over 50 shots during the invasion of their home between 6 and 7pm on the fateful.
The late Adube , who was the head of the family, was the Treasurer of the APC in ONELGA, and a former Chairman of the local government .
Adube was allegedly killed along with two of his sons , John and Lucky Anube; his daughter , Miss Joy Anube; his nephew, Mr . Ikechukwu Ogarabe; and his driver, Mr . Samuel Chukwuonye.
Narrating her ordeal as she held a picture of his late husband with her three children, she said she was outside the premises and was within the neighbourhood when she started hearing gunshots.
“ I saw the body of one of my son lying on my husband ’ s body both in the pool of their blood. I also saw my daughter ’ s body lying on the floor.
“ I lifted one, it was a dead body ; I lifted another , it was a dead body …oh Jesus !” she said as she broke down in tears.

Pogba’s world-record fee a burden at Man United – Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has told Omnisport he believes Paul Pogba’s world-record transfer fee has weighed heavy on the player’s shoulders in his first season back at the club.
Pogba, 24, returned to Old Trafford last summer in an £89.3 million move from Juventus, but has struggled for consistency for much of the campaign.
And Mourinho hopes a club breaks the transfer record to take the pressure off the France international.
“I think the problem is the tag, the price tag on his back,” Mourinho said. “I hope next summer he’s not anymore the highest transfer fee and then the pressure goes to somebody else.

Femi Fani-Kayode: The Ringing of Coup Bells and a Cause for Deep Concern

I am very worried now. Ever since 1966 the northern ruling class has ALWAYS effected a coup d’etat whenever they feel sufficiently threatened with the loss of power.
The only time that they failed to do this, to their eternal regret, was when President Goodluck Jonathan succeeded President Umaru Yar”Adua after the latter’s death in 2010.
Up until today they blame my friend and brother Lt. Abdulrahman General Dambazau for that failure and they felt he was weak and cowardly.
This is because he was the Chief of Army Staff at the time and he did not strike.

Osinbajo cannot replace Buhari in 2019 if anything happens to PMB – Northern elders

The Northern Elders Forum has declared that the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo cannot replace President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 should anything happen to Buhari who has been abroad for a medical follow-up.
Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, Professor Ango Abdullahi, said should President Muhammadu Buhari fail to seek re-election in 2019, the North must retain the presidency by fielding a candidate through the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, party.
Abdullahi said although Professor Osinbajo, according to the constitution, should be allowed to complete the current tenure being Buhari’s Vice, he must not contest in 2019 should Buhari fail to recontest for a second term.
“The constitutional provision says that in the event that the president dies in office or becomes incapacitated for one reason or the other and cannot perform the duties of his office, he will be succeeded by the Vice president.”
“But no one is in a position to know at what point he is going to recover fully and come back to office, or whether the unexpected could happen. The northern elders insist that Osinbajo cannot replace Buhari in 2019.”
“If the worst case scenario happens, and Buhari is not back on seat, the constitution is very clear that the vice president takes over.”
“And what we then expect is that he will take that tenure to its logical end and from there, the politics of power sharing will take precedence over anything else,” Abdullahi said.
He also said that, “When the unexpected happens, in 2019, we will be back to our position that the north should be treated equitably and fairly.”
“And we expect that another northern candidate will emerge as presidential candidate on the platform of APC.”

Europe bars Nigerian Airline, Med-View from its airspace over safety lapses

The European Union Air Safety Commission has banned Nigerian airline, Med-View Airlines, from operating within its airspace over alleged safety lapses.
Med-View Airline is based in Lagos. It was founded in 2007 as a charter airline that mainly operates Hajj flights which carry Muslim pilgrims to Islamic holy lands.
However, alongside Nigerian Med-View airline barred from entering Europe or flying within its airspace are the St. Vincent of Ukraine and the Grenadines of Zimbabwe.
According to a prohibition list of airlines, EU Air Safety List Annex A, containing names of airlines and countries the union bars from entering or operating in the European airspace, Nigerian Med-View Airlines became one of the 174 airlines barred due to safety oversight by aviation authorities in their home countries after all airlines from Benin Republic and Mozambique were removed from the list, indicating they had been cleared and certified safe to fly.
File: The last batch of 2011 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia by Med-View carrier arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
A total of 181 airlines before Nigerian airline under the EU Air Safety List Annex A were originally barred from flying into Europe.
The EU Air Safety List is a list of non-European airlines that do not meet international safety standards, and are therefore subject to an operating ban or operational restrictions within the European Union.
Although Med-View is yet to make an official statement on the development, sources said they are working to resolve the issue and that the United Kingdom authorities would soon visit Nigeria to carry out safety audit on the airline.
