Germany international tells friends he wants to sign for Man United – report

Mesut Ozil has told his friends that he wants to sign for Manchester United from Arsenal next year, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Mail is claiming that the 29-year-old World Cup winner is keen on a transfer to Old Trafford as his contract at Arsenal continues to tick down.

Ozil, like Alexis Sanchez, has just a few months left on his current contract with the Gunners as he continues to be linked with a move away from The Emirates.

The same story says that Ozil has already rejected the offer of a new contract worth £235,000 a week at Arsenal.

The article says that Ozil wants wages closer to £300,000 a week and that Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, who worked with him at Real Madrid, has been monitoring the playmaker’s situation closely.

The report also claims that Ozil has made it “plain” to friends that he favours a move to Manchester United in the new year.

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal could opt to cash in on Ozil in the January transfer window, rather than risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Arsenal take on Newcastle United at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon.

Sephora News: Finally !!!! Law school graduate who was not called to BAR breaks silence

The Nigerian Law School graduate who was denied access to the venue of the bar ceremony earlier this week says her demand remains the need to grant approval for the use of hijab among Muslim law graduates.

Firdaus Amasa, a graduate of the University of Ilorin, had been denied access to the ceremony after insisting on wearing hijab during the ceremony.

Ms. Amasa was specifically refused entry into the hall for insisting to wear the wig on top of her hijab – a headscarf.

The case has attracted significant attention on social media, with Nigerians divided on her decision and that of the authorities of the law school.

Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday, Ms. Amasa maintained that she remained resolute in her convictions to set a precedent for Hijab-wearing Muslims during the ceremony.

“My major concern is the approval of Hijab so that every person coming behind me will be able to use it for the call to bar (ceremony). ”

When asked whether she was aware of rules and regulations that guide against the use of Hijab at the ceremony, she said there was none, stressing that it was merely based on conventions.

“There is nothing like that (laws preventing the use of Hijab),” she told newsmen, “When you ask them too, they tell you it is convention; that that is how it is done and it has to remain like that.”

Asked what motivated her to take the decision, she explained that she wanted to change the narrative and give Muslim sisters the rights to express their constitutional rights as enshrined in the constitution.

“I knew that was what was going to happen,” she said of the consequences of her decision. She, however, said she remained resolute in her convictions to speak for the recognition of rights of female Muslim law graduates.

She explained further that the Law School has not said anything on the case, adding that the support from the Muslim community has been impressive.

“My demand is that Hijab should be approved,” she affirmed.

Meanwhile, Tawakalitu Amasa, a younger sister to Ms. Amasa, also called on Nigerians irrespective of religious leanings to support the cause.

I’m grateful to my label for that; it’s hard work and with God’s help I’ll become the biggest music artiste in the world; not big like Wizkid but big like the late Bob Marley by God’s grace”, he said.

Speaking further, he bragged of how big he has become in less than three years of breaking into limelight.

Sugar Boy is a force to be reckoned with; I’m the future, the same way they saw Wizkid back in the day when Bank W asked people to watch out for him, that’s who I’m right now, by God’s grace I’ll be a music mogul in years to come.”

Man United want to sign 24-year-old to replace Mkhitaryan in January – report

Manchester United have identified Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario as the man to replace Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Old Trafford in the January transfer window, according to reports in Italy.

Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, as quoted by the Daily Mirror , is reporting that the Red Devils have identified Mario as a possible target for the mid-season transfer window as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his squad.

Mkhitaryan has struggled to produce consistent form for Manchester United this season and was once again left out of the squad altogether for the 1-0 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

His lack of playing time this season has inevitably prompted suggestions that he could be on his way out of Old Trafford, and it is claimed that the 24-year-old Mario could be lined up as his replacement.

The same report says that Inter Milan would look to recoup the £40m paid to sign Mario from Sporting Lisbon in 2016.

Mario has made three assists in 11 Serie A appearances for Inter Milan so far this season.

Mkhitaryan, meanwhile, has made five assists and scored one goal in 12 Premier League games this term, but he has not featured since the 1-0 win over Brighton on 25 November.

Arsene Wenger replies when asked if Mesut Ozil is signing for Man United

Arsene Wenger has insisted that Arsenal have not had any approach from Manchester United to sign Mesut Ozil after the Red Devils were linked with a move for the playmaker.

There have been reports in the British media in recent weeks suggesting that Ozil could be a target for the Red Devils as Jose Mourinho ponders bolstering his attacking options next year.

Ozil’s future at Arsenal has been a relentless source of speculation in recent months after both he and Alexis Sanchez entered into the final few months of their contracts at The Emirates.

The 29-year-old has been in good form for the north London side in recent weeks as he bids to help Arsenal break back into the top four.

Wenger was quizzed about Ozil’s situation at his weekly news briefing on Friday morning, but the Frenchman insisted that there had been no contact from Manchester United.

Asked about the rumours linking Ozil with a move to Old Trafford, Wenger told a news conference: “We have never been approached by Man United in any way, so I don’t see why that came up and who found that, that’s always something that’s been created.”

Ozil will be expecting to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon with a home clash against Newcastle United.

The Gunners head into this weekend’s round of Premier League games in seventh place in the table.

'Mkhitaryan could be bargaining chip'

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be used as a "bargaining chip" in the January transfer window if Manchester United look to sign new players, according to Alan Smith.

Mkhitaryan began the season in impressive form by providing five assists in the club's first three Premier League games.

However, the Armenia international has fallen out of favour in recent months and has failed to make Jose Mourinho's 18-man squad for seven of United's last eight matches, with his only recent appearance coming as a substitute against Brighton on November 25.

Mourinho insists other players in his squad are more deserving of a starting place than Mkhitaryan based on current form and Smith believes the former Borussia Dortmund player could be sold in order to make way for another midfielder, with Mesut Ozil among the names linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho insists other players are more deserving of a place in his squad

"Who knows what will happen in January? There will be plenty of offers for someone like Mkhitaryan," said Smith on Premier League Daily .

"Whether they will be the right place or not is another matter. He is a sellable asset and a bargaining chip perhaps for somebody else that Mourinho might want to get in.

"I still think he would be reluctant to sell somebody like that, who is a quality player when he is playing with confidence."

Smith believes Mkhitaryan still has a future at Old Trafford despite his recent spell out of the side.
"He has not been playing well enough but maybe the system doesn't suit [him]," said Smith.

Mesut Ozil has been linked with a January move to United
"He [Mourinho] has been relying on the likes of (Anthony) Martial and (Marcus) Rashford in those wide positions. Jesse Lingard has also been showing good form.

"Mkhitaryan hasn't been playing well enough. He is a very talented boy but is yet to show us on a consistent basis what he showed at Dortmund, for instance.

"I don't think Mourinho will be giving up on him just yet. It shows the depth of their squad really in terms of talent, that he hasn't made the matchday squad a few times."

Steven Gerrard: What impressed me about Chelsea under Antonio Conte

Steven Gerrard has admitted that he was very impressed by Chelsea’s performance in their 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

The Blues headed into the game looking to get back to winning ways after the disappointment of their 1-0 loss to West Ham United at the Olympic Stadium last weekend.

Goals from Willian, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Pedro Rodriguez wrapped up the three points for Antonio Conte’s men and kept them in third place in the Premier League table.

Chelsea have struggled to produce consistent form this season as Conte’s men have had to deal with a return to the Champions League, something they did not have to cope with last term.

And Liverpool FC legend was very impressed by what he saw from Conte’s side as they returned to winning ways in style on Tuesday night with a solid win at Huddersfield Town.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Gerrard said: “Chelsea had all the answers. They forced Huddersfield into mistakes. They pressed really high.

“Chelsea right from the off were right at it. They were inventive. They played at a real speed and intensity that Huddersfield couldn’t cope with.
“It’s the Chelsea we are used to seeing.”

Chelsea will now look to make it back to back wins in the top flight when they take on Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues will take on Barcelona for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals in the new year after the draw was made in Nyon on Monday.

SEPHORA NEWS: President Muhammadu Buhari returns to Nigeria from Paris

President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to Abuja after participating at the “One Planet” summit in Paris, France.

The president’s aircraft landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, at about 4:35 p.m. where he was received by senior government officials including his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Musa Bello.

While in Paris, President Buhari had appealed to the international community to support Nigeria’s commitment to reduce the negative effects of climate change.

Mr. Buhari told participants that Nigeria could not implement its Nationally Determined Contributions without adequate financial, technical and capacity building support from developed nations.

He said Nigeria had already ratified the Paris Agreement in May 2017 but its Nationally Determined Contributions to reduce emission by 20 per cent by 2020 and 40 per cent by 2030 could not be attained alone.
According to him, the country is not under illusion of the challenges it is facing, having just come out of recession.

The summit with the theme “Climate Change Financing’’, was attended by over 60 heads of state and governments, as well as representatives of non-governmental and private organisations.

SEPHORA NEWS: Biafra: I ‘ll sabotage another war on Igboland – Nwodo

PRESIDENT General of apex Igbo Socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia, has vowed to sabotage any attempt to levy war on Igboland in the name of agitation for Biafra.

Chief Nwodo made the vow, yesterday, while addressing Ndigbo in Lagos at the practice pitch of the National Stadium.

Recalling how he lost his best friend at the war front during the Nigeria-Biafra war, how more than two million Igbo lost their lives and how many dreams were aborted, Nwodo said as a leader he would not fold his arms and watch his people suffer such destruction again.

Nwodo said he is not against the agitation for Biafra self determination and cries of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB because the Igbo are truly marginalised and oppressed in Nigeria.

However, he said is opposed to the methodology of the agitators because it cannot work in Nigeria as currently constituted.

The only way out, he argued, is restructuring and enthronement of fiscal federalism which will allow the states to control their resources, handle issues like police, education, health, mineral resources, etc while the Federal Government handle functions like immigration, customs, central banking, aviation and external affairs.

Nwodo declared his opposition to another war in Igboland when pro-Biafran youths wielding placards stormed the venue while he was addressing the crowd.

Pleading with the security not to deal with the protesters, Nwodo said: “Nobody should touch these youths.

They are my children. When I was their age, I was in the trench fighting for Biafra. My best friend died at the battle front.

More than one million people were killed in the battle, one and half million people starved to death…you can’t be a youth then without going to the battle front.

I can’t allow that to happen to my people again. That is why I will be a saboteur in any attempt to levy another war on Igboland. That is why Ohanaeze wants restructuring of Nigeria.”

Noting that Southern leaders, southern governors and senators, and the Middle belt have agreed on the need to restructure Nigeria, he said the rejoinder of Northern senators to the Southern senators’ call on President Muhammadu Buhari to restructure the country was watery.

“Northern senators issued a rejoinder to our position on restructuring, that we are heating the polity but they did not address the points we raised,” he said.

On the leadership crisis in Lagos chapter of Ohanaeze, he said the recent election remains nullified because it was held in breach of the directives of Ohanaeze National Executive Committee, NEC.

He urged all Igbo in Lagos to end their differences, unite and go a fresh elections, which he assured will be transparent, free and fair.

He Lamented that disunity is the major reason Igbo are not getting their fair share in the affairs of the state in spite of being over four million in population and contributing about 40 per cent of taxes paid in Lagos.

Notable Igbo leaders at the gathering include: Chief Guy Ikokwu, Agunze Chibueze Ikokwu, Chief Sylvan Ebigwei, Eze Hycinth Ohazulike, Chief Eric Ebe, Prince Emeka Ogbu and Chief Fabian Duru.

Sephora News: Human trafficking: Group urges cartels to respect Oba of Benin’s condemnation or face wrath of ancestors

A Benin-based Non-Governmental Organisation, the Initiative for Youth Awareness on Migration Development and Reintegration (IYAMIDR), led by Comrade Solomon Okoduwa, has urged human trafficking cartels to give up the illegal trade as a show of respect for the public condemnation of the ugly business by the Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, or face the wrath of the ancestors.

The group said that the Benin Monarch’s pronouncement is law and has cleared the way for all Edo people to come out en masse to fight against the criminal trade in human beings.

“Nobody goes against the words of the highly revered Oba of Benin, and we wish to call on all Edo people who are into human trafficking to desist from it forthwith. No excuse is good enough for the trade in human beings and not even the flimsy excuse of poverty is sufficient basis for such inhuman exploitation of our people,” Okoduwa said.

He maintained that Edo people are very industrious, creative and courageous “and the time has come for the few people who are into human trafficking to give it up as many Benin parents are raising great children from their small and medium scale businesses.”

“We urge one Mr Eranomigho Edegbe and his cohorts in Europe and other parts of the world to renounce their trade and support for human traffickers or face the wrath of the ancestors.

History is replete with the tragedies that befall people who go against the pronouncements of the Oba of Benin. In the past, those who went against the declaration of the Oba were either banished or faced a series of misfortunes.”

The anti-human trafficking campaigner urged adherents of the traditional religion, some native doctors and priests who collaborate with the human trafficking cartels, using charms, oaths and other means to keep the victims in perpetual servitude, to release all such victims of human trafficking as a show of respect for the words of the Oba of Benin.

“Prostitution was and is still a socially disapproved practice that gained popularity when society started celebrating easy money and later assumed the status of a profession in many dysfunctional homes and families.

“We are proud of the several hardworking Edo women who dominate the oil and gas industry, the creative or entertainment industry, many in the academia, banking and finance, media and several other sectors of the economy. For example, we have Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru who has made Edo people proud in administration.

Professor Ameze Guobadia is a prominent law professor, Senator Daisy Danjuma has made us proud in politics and business, Mrs Adesuwa Oyenekwe, is clearly the most versatile television presenter around.

Anne-Marie Imafidon, who was decorated by Queen Elizabeth II, with the prestigious honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to young women with specialty in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), recently in England, is a Benin lady.

“Author and wife of former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mrs Arese Carrington, is a proud Edo woman same with Professor Osayamen Yinka Omorogbe, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State; Sandra Aguebor of the Female Mechanic Initiative and Professor Helen Asemota, to mention a few,” the organisation said.

Recall that the Benin Monarch, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs by Governor Godwin Obaseki, threw his weight and that of the Edo State Traditional Council behind the fight against illegal migration and human trafficking, which have claimed the lives of thousands of Edo youths.

Oba Ewuare II expressed disappointment in the Nigerian Embassy in Libya and the Libyan government for their inability to tackle the crisis.

He said it was particularly frustrating that it had to take a news report by the Cable News Network (CNN) for the government and other stakeholders to respond to the crisis.

The Benin Monarch said the crisis could have been better managed if the relevant authorities lived up to their roles, instead of allowing it to fester. He commended the governor for his efforts at resettling and reintegrating the Libyan returnees through various skills acquisition programmes.

The Sun is reporting that Manchester United are interested in the 21-year-old, who is valued at around £20m following his impressive performances in the Bundesliga.

The same article states that their title rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also tracking Hoffenheim’s Germany Under-21 international ahead of the January transfer window.

BREAKING: Nigerian Man Living In England Kills His Own Daughter | Photos

A Nigerian man in Greater Manchester, England, has been dragged to face justice after he killed his own daughter in quite an unbelievable manner.

Dr Chizoro Edohasim, a Nigerian father has been found guilty of crashing his car in a ‘reckless and suicidal’ manner, killing one of his daughters and injuring another in England.

According to Metro UK, Dr Chizoro Edohasim killed daughter Olivia, nine, by dangerous driving and left Eva, 11, with injuries.

He crashed his car into a wall at up to 59mph in a 30mph area while taking his daughters to a maths class last year.

He jumped a red light in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, then crashed into the wall while accelerating.

Olivia, who was in the back seat, died at the scene while her older sister, in the passenger seat, was taken to Manchester Children’s Hospital for emergency surgery.

Prosecutors at Minshull Street Crown Court described his driving as being ‘far short of what would be expected by a competent driver’.

Prosecutor Andrew Nuttall said: ‘In [expert] opinion, he drove applying full throttle to the Toyota demanding maximum power travelling at speeds of at least 59mph across the junction and at no time was the brake ever used.’

As CCTV of the incident was played in court, Edohasim wept and held his head in hands, saying: ‘Why did this happen to me? My family, my daughter. Where are you? I can’t take it. How did this happen to us?’

He tried to blame a mechanical failure for the crash, but vehicle inspectors said there was no evidence of failure in the brakes that would cause such a loss of control.

Witness Nicholas Gee, who was driving the road in the opposite direction a the time of the incident, told the court: ‘There was a car overtaking other vehicles in my lane coming towards me.

‘I realised that if I didn’t do something it was going to hit me. If I had not stopped there would have been a head-on collision.’
He added: ‘The driving was reckless and suicidal.’

The jury heard that Dr Edohasim, who also suffered serious injuries in the collision, told a police officer at the scene: ‘My brakes failed.’

The court was read a transcript of the defendant’s interviews with police in which he said: ‘I have been saving lives as a doctor all my life.. This is how the Devil gets me back.’

He told officers he applied the brakes twice. The first time ‘it felt like I was driving through water’, the court heard.

On the second occasion he said the vehicle ‘doubled in speed.’
‘I remember thinking, ‘God, is this how it ends?’,’ he said in the interviews.
Dr Edohasim will be sentenced on January 26.

Sephora News: Driving instructor nabbed for raping, killing NYSC member

The police in Ogun say they have arrested a 29-year-old driving instructor, name withheld, for allegedly raping and killing one Ms Modupe Taiyese, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Abeokuta, Ogun.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ahmed Iliyasu, told journalists at the scene of the crime in Abule Ayo area on Thursday that the suspect had confessed to the crime.

Iliyasu said prior to the arrest of the suspect, the coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Mr John Okon had complained to the command about a missing corps member in the state.

“We went for a powerful technical screening of fact left behind by the last person she contacted, who is the suspect; we are able to arrest him.
“We are able to uncover this nefarious act and he led us to this place and confessed.

“Technically, the information led to one person, an indigene of Uromi in Edo, who was teaching this innocent corps member, Taiyese Modupe, how to drive car.

“The man tactically and deceitfully convinced her on Saturday evening that her driving permit was ready.

“She decided to answer his call and he cleverly and deceitfully apprehended the lady and brought her down to this forest where he had a forceful and unlawful carnal knowledge of her. Thereafter, he strangled her to death,” he said.

Ilyasu also said the police tracked the suspect, following some passport photographs found at the scene of the crime.

“The passport photographs of the suspect were found at the scene of the incident which is a remarkable evidence of crime.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the corpse of the deceased has not been removed from the scene of the crime as at the time of filing this report.

The police boss advised members of the public to be wary of persons they interact with to avert unpleasant consequences.

He, however, restated the commitment of the police in the state to protect lives and property, saying that the state had no room for criminal activities.

The suspect told journalists that he dragged the victim into a forest and had sex with her before he strangled her to death.

“After I took her to this place, I told her that I wanted to have sex with her, she said `No’, but I dragged her into the bush and had sex with her.

“After having sex with her, she said she would tell her family; that was when I tore her cloth and used it to strangle her.

“As she was gasping, I ran away,” the suspect said.

She was left with signs of strangulation and more than 30 stab wounds on her body.

Prosecution lawyer NK Unnikrishnan said the court handed down the death sentence to the convict, Ameerul Islam for Jisha’s rape and murder.

We are happy that we managed to get the harshest punishment awarded to him by the court,” Unnikrishnan said
Under India’s legal system, the convict can challenge both his conviction and sentence in a higher court.

The police were accused of botching the investigation.

The case triggered an intense debate in Kerala about the safety of women, especially Dalit women.

The sentence comes few days to the fifth anniversary of gang raped of another young female student in the Indian capital in 2012 which led to widespread public outrage and strengthening of laws against sexual assault.

One in four rape cases in India ended in conviction in 2016 according to the National Crime Records Bureau data, the lowest rate since 2012.

Activists ascribe this largely to shoddy police investigations.

Sephora News: David Cameron criticises Donald Trump for 'fake news' attacks on media

David Cameron has joined the chorus criticising US President Donald Trump for his tirades against the media, saying his attacks on "fake news" was undermining democracy.

In his first public speech since stepping down after his failed attempt to win a vote to stay in the European Union last year, the former prime minister said Mr Trump was corrupting society and diverting attention from real abuses through his attacks on outlets like CNN and the BBC.

“President Trump: ‘fake news’ is not broadcasters criticising you, it's Russian bots and trolls targeting your democracy, pumping out untrue stories day after day, night after night,” Mr Cameron said at an anti-corruption lecture hosted by Transparency International and law firm Clifford Chance in London.

“When you misappropriate the term fake news, you are deflecting attention from real abuses. Ignoring what’s happening on social media is facilitating a form of corruption that is undermining democracy.”

Mr Cameron championed the fight against corruption and pushed through legislation strengthening the hand of law enforcement officials.

Now, he said, the problem was worsening.

Taking aim at Russia, he suggested underhand tactics had been used by the country to win the right to stage the 2018 Fifa World Cup .

“I am sure (President Vladimir Putin) wasn’t completely surprised when Russia actually won the bid. You couldn’t make it up. In the years since, 10 of the 22 members of that Fifa executive committee were indicted or punished.”

He also said the EU had not done enough to fight Russia's attempts to interfere with Europe's democracies.

“To be honest this is one area where, far from being too quick to act, the EU has been far too slow,” he added.

“Barack Obama used to challenge European leaders over how we seemed to ignore or even tolerate Russian subversion of some eastern European business, energy, media or even political interests. He was bang on target.”

Sephora News: Buhari’s farming is bad propaganda

To President Muhammadu Buhari’ s ardent followers, certain spectacles are heartwarming emblems of his simplicity , but, they are in fact , bad PR.

The image of the President of Nigeria watching a 32-inch TV, for instance, should be nobody’ s idea of austereness neither should it deserve the fuss it attracted .

The same can be said of his farm pictures which have surfaced for the second time in two years. In 2015 , the pictures of Buhari visiting his farm shortly after becoming President should have been an alarm.

There was little about that farm that spelled technological innovation, entrepreneurial creativity , or any perspicacity that suggested he had what it would take to stimulate national development.

When the pictures resurfaced in 2017 , very little had changed. The man still keeps cows the same way our grandparents kept domestic animals .

Even more unsettling is the fact that we live in a globally connected world where other world leaders intuit our leaders and our collective mental development from the way we narrate ourselves. Buhari shared the picture before leaving for the One Planet Summit in France .

He would have preempted his own arrival in Europe with a confirmation that the largest conglomeration of Black people in the world is stuck in a time warp.

Where does one even start? In 2017 , Buhari hopes the picture of himself growing fruits and vegetables , and practising animal husbandry at a level that barely transcends subsistence farming , has any discernible potential to solve the nation ’ s food crisis?

The man has lived through similar specious programmes like “ Green Revolution , ” “Operation Feed the Nation, ” and “ National School Agriculture Programme, ” yet his grand vision for Nigeria is still non-industrialised agriculture ? Even the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, reduced official work days from five to three so that people could take up farming .

If , with all those efforts, Nigerians are still unable to feed themselves , it could only mean that previous solutions were cosmetic and the fundamentals of farming problems in Nigeria still need addressing .

What is the point of Buhari’ s advocating more people to take up farming when we have problems of land tenure system , desertification, storage facilities , manufacturing , electricity , poor road access to urban markets where the produce would find a market , and perennial food wastage ?

The issue of food wastage in Nigeria was raised by the Agriculture Minister, Audu Ogbeh, last year when he observed that 30-40 per cent of our farm produce end up wasted. Our problems are not food production in itself; it is that failure to create structures that can distribute what we have sufficiently .

Nigeria does not need to be an agrarian economy where we will hang a hoe on our shoulders, and “go back to land ” to survive.

What we need is knowledge and the political will to execute smart ideas. It is thanks to such cultivated knowledge that a state like California , partly situated in the desert, can be the food basket of the USA .

The state earns an average annual income of $ 50bn on farming alone , and that is about twice the entire budget of Nigeria with all her oil revenue. Yet , less than three per cent of their citizens are involved in farming .

How do they do it ? Technology , innovation, and creativity . When the yams Nigeria sent to Europe sometime this year with so much fanfare were returned as not up to par, our cultural deficiencies were immediately obvious.

What the world wants to buy is between our ears, not in the ground.

Developed economies of the world have so industrialised that machines have replaced the humans who used to work on slave plantations. People who travel through Libya to Europe arrive there ( for those who do anyway ) to find that the jobs available for Black labourers are mostly sex-based .

With smaller land mass and population than Nigeria , countries like The Netherlands , Italy , and Germany make far more money on food exports than Nigeria makes on oil. They apply creative solutions for maximum productivity .

Today , developed countries have a lot of time for leisure and can concentrate their intellect on the less rudimentary issues such as development in areas of health , environment, climate change , human rights , and the elevation of the human soul through cultural productions.

That is the standard Nigerian leaders should be nudging people towards , not further prod the land to yield food when we have not demonstrated enough sagacity to handle what we already get .

There are problems with our leaders brandishing an unreconstructed mind , living 19th - century realities in the 21 st century . Their anachronism , and the archaic ideas they deploy explain why our problems seem extremely complicated .

From building roads that last to planning budgets that are not fraught with statistical failures, we recycle pretty much the same issues annually .

Buhari ’ s government has learned to hide behind jaded excuses such as “ corruption is fighting back ” when what fights back so viciously is the failure to evolve, to think outside the debilitating circumstances that created the problems we are trying to solve . We are overwhelmed by the weight of our troubles , and very little is changing.

The recurring problem of corruption in Nigeria underscores how the inveterate approach we have used to tackle these issues contributes to their resilience.

This year , we have been confronted with several high -profile cases of corruption that are psychologically draining .

Nigerians that have been so frequently outraged at some point can barely summon enough anger over emerging cases of corruption . It is almost safe to conclude that people no longer care about these issues anymore.

People are drained , and it is almost impossible to keep up with them as they are being churned out. The Mainagate started as a drama but right before our eyes , it metamorphosed into a tragedy, a tragicomedy , and then a farce.

The probe that resulted in the House of Representatives was painful to follow ; the bureaucracy by which our lives are being governed is not only outdated , they are so faulty they admit the same problems year in and year out.

The systems are loose , decidedly uncoordinated , and internally programmed to fail.

One reads through the drama that happened at the National Assembly during the probe and wonders if the ineptitude displayed by the main actors who run the country at the top echelons is not a deliberate attempt to undermine Nigeria .

While that is still sizzling , then came the weighty accusations exchanged by the Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, and the Securities and Exchange Commission DG , Mounir Gwarzo .

There are too many details in the allegations both parties are bartering that fail to add up . At some point , one wonders if we are ever going to overcome our problems or we are fated to be this way .

Are these people governing or they are toying with the control buttons of governance? One becomes considerably soberer when one realises that these same issues of corruption and what not were what we fruitlessly tackled under the PDP for 16 years.

Amidst all these , we have a President preaching subsistence farming thus confirming that his approach to complex issues is oversimplified solutions that have no viability in present times .

In case the Presidency forgets , the rest of the world follows what happens in our country and assesses our capacity to resolve our issues through our leaders and the way they reason.

The images of our President canvassing subsistence agriculture are , in that wise, a poor commentary on our collective intelligence and our capability to solve problems .

I understand Buhari has to appeal to his followers who get easily titillated by his supposed earthiness but they should be mindful that we also live in an interconnected world where local idiocies have global implications .

Our country builds universities like pure water factories and yet we act naïve ; practically asking the world infantilise us.

Sephora News: Court orders senate to swear in Okonkwo Obiora as senator for Anambra central

A Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday ordered the swearing in of Obiora Okonkwo as Senator representing Central Senatorial District of Anambra state.

Justice John Tsoho in the judgement said Okonkwo was validly nominated as candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the December 7, 2014 senatorial election.

Justice Tsoho ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw a Certificate of Return earlier issued to another aspirant, Mrs Uche Ekwenife and a fresh one be issued to Okonkwo.

Okonkwo had, in 2014 instituted a court action against the PDP, its then National Chairman, Adamu Muazu, INEC and Mrs Uche Ekwenife, challenging the nomination of Ekwenife as PDP’s candidate of the party for the 2015 National Assembly election.

However, in the course of hearing of the suit, all the four defendants withdrew their processes against the case and agreed to submit themselves to the judgment of the Federal High Court.

In the judgment, Justice Tsoho agreed with counsel to the plaintiff, Sebastine Hon (SAN) that, in view of the withdrawal of all the respondents, the court was at liberty under the law to enter judgment in favour of Okonkwo.

Counsel to Okonkwo said his client was not party to the suit, which led INEC to fixing January 13, 2018 for re-run. “The only senator on the Anambra Senatorial District is Obiora Okonkwo. That election is not going to hold,” he said.

The fate of the date fixed by the INEC for the re-run might be at risk after this judgement.

It would be recalled that on November 20, 2017, the Court of Appeal in Abuja, ordered the INEC to conduct a re-run election for Anambra Central Senatorial District within 90 days.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Chief Victor Umeh, had filed an appeal against the February 29, 2017, judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, wherein the trial judge, Justice Anwuli Chikere, ordered the inclusion of the PDP and its candidate, Senator Uche Ekwenife, in the scheduled Anambra Central Senatorial re-run poll.

The court had refused the application by Sharon Ikeazor to be recognised as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the re-run of the cancelled March 2015 Anambra Central Senatorial election.

The Anambra Central Senatorial seat at the upper chamber of the National Assembly has been vacant, following the nullification of Senator Ekwenife’s election.

The Court of Appeal Division in Enugu had in July 2015, voided Ekwenife’s election for not being “the product of a valid primary and was therefore not duly and legitimately nominated.”

Sephora News: Man Utd scrape past Bournemouth

Manchester United got back to winning ways at Old Trafford after the derby tussle with a workmanlike 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday.

Romelu Lukaku (25) silenced his critics with the winning strike midway through the first-half, his first goal in five Premier League games although he refused to celebrate.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford went close in the second period but it was Bournemouth who created more chances, registering seven shots on target but they found David de Gea once again in defiant mood.

The victory leaves United 11 points behind leaders Manchester City, who won 4-0 at Swansea.

Player Ratings

Manchester United: De Gea (8), Jones (8), Smalling (7), Shaw (7), Valencia (7), McTominay (6), Matic (6), Lingard (5), Mata (7), Martial (5), Lukaku (7).
Subs: Rashford (7), Young (6), Herrera (6)

Bournemouth: Begovic (6), Francis (6), Ake (6), Gosling (6), Daniels (6), Smith (6), Fraser (6), Stanislas (7), Arter (7), King (7), Wilson (7)
Subs: Defoe (7), Afobe (6), Cook (6)

Man of the match: David de Gea

Lukaku, who faced criticism for his part in United's damaging loss to rivals Manchester City at the weekend, showed great determination to head his team in front.

Juan Mata hung a ball up to the back post and the striker rose above Charlie Daniels and Nathan Ake to power a header into the top corner.

At the other end, De Gea was kept busy by the visitors who tested him with five efforts on targets in the first half, the pick of which came from a stinging Daniels strike from 25 yards.

Team news

Jose Mourinho made four changes from the derby defeat with Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay handed rare starts. Meanwhile, Dan Gosling, Adam Smith, Harry Arter and Callum Wilson returned for Bournemouth.

United settled better after the break and should have doubled their lead but Martial fired over from five yards after Lukaku was denied from close range.

Substitute Marcus Rashford then rattled the underside of the crossbar on 72 minutes but that was the last of United's attacking intent as they sank deeper to protect their lead.

Despite good territory, the Cherries could not find the killer opportunity although Jermain Defoe was denied by a well-positioned De Gea on 83 minutes.

Bournemouth did have one final chance from a 25-yard free-kick in injury time but Ryan Fraser's powerful effort was held by De Gea, who recorded his 10th clean sheet of the Premier League season.

Manager reaction

Jose Mourinho: "When you lose a match it's important you don't lose two in a row. Every team that loses a match tries not to lose the next one. That's the magic of football. We tried and we managed it. We are happy."

Eddie Howe: "They have an outstanding goalkeeper who made a number of good saves and maybe we could have done better in and around their box, but when you consider the opposition and where were playing, I was very pleased with players"

Pundit reaction

Alan McInally: "Eddie Howe will be gutted they haven't scored, gutted they haven't come away with something from the game, because I think they contained Manchester United.

I never saw United really controlling huge parts of the game and really pressing them back. With 10 minutes to go, United had had two shots on target."

This was not quite the brilliance of his Arsenal performance two weeks ago as Bournemouth's finishing lacked the required quality to severely test him, yet he was still outstanding.

The Spaniard dealt with every single shot Bournemouth threw at him, where his positioning came to the fore.

De Gea has kept the most Premier League clean sheets (10) and has made the most saves in the league of any goalkeeper. World-class.

What's next?

United are back in action on Super Sunday against West Brom before Bournemouth host Liverpool in the day's second live game.

Sephora News: Ander Herrera sends message to Man United fans after ‘dive’

Ander Herrera has insisted that Manchester United should have been awarded a penalty late on during their 2-1 derby loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

The Spanish midfielder appeared to be brought down by Nicolas Otamendi in the box but referee Michael Oliver instead opted to show a yellow card to Herrera for diving.

The spot-kick would have presented the Red Devils with the opportunity to snatch an equaliser in the closing stages of the game against Pep Guardiola’s men.

As it finished, the Red Devils slumped to a disappointing defeat by their bitter local rivals as they fell 11 points behind them in the table.

Herrera admits that he was shocked to be shown a yellow card for diving and remains convinced that it was a penalty.

Herrera is quoted as saying for Sky Sports : “I think the penalty [decision] is amazing. He didn’t expect to arrive for the ball. I touched the ball first and he stamped on my foot. I think everyone saw it.

“Everyone can make mistakes too, also the referee. I didn’t deserve the yellow card. In the first half, there were similar situations with Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane, and they didn’t get yellow cards.

“That is my fourth yellow card and that is a big problem for me.”

The midfielder will be hoping to start for Manchester United when they attempt to return to winning ways in the Premier League with a home clash against Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since their famous final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.

Manchester United finished sixth last season but won both the League Cup and Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

Sephora News: Eden Hazard makes honest admission to Chelsea fans after Huddersfield win

Eden Hazard has admitted that Chelsea are struggling to cope with the hectic run of fixtures after their return to the Champions League this season.

Chelsea won the Premier League title in style last term in what was Antonio Conte’s first season in charge at the west London side.

However, Chelsea did not have the distraction of any European football as they were able to concentrate solely on domestic affairs on their way towards their title triumph last season.

The Blues are back in the Champions League this term and have already played an extra six games than they had at this point last season.

Hazard admits that is having an effect on Chelsea’s sharpness but refused to use it as an excuse for the Blues’ up and down form this season.

Speaking to BT Sport after the Blues’ 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night, Hazard said: “Yes of course [it is draining].

“We have a lot of games in a short period. We didn’t have this last year because of no Champions League.
“But since I came to Chelsea for six years now, every year is the same. We can deal with that. We have a lot of players in the squad.”

Chelsea return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host Southampton at Stamford Bridge looking to make it back to back wins in the top flight.

The west London side will take on Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League next year after the draw was made in Nyon on Monday.

Sephora News: 2019: I’m not after Osinbajo’s job – Tinubu

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has described as fake news a newspaper report that he is to pair President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential ticket of the party.

Tinubu and Osinbajo Tinubu, in a statement yesterday, said the report which envisaged that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was returning to full-time pastoral work was without empirical or logical basis.

Affirming that he had full confidence in the pair of Buhari and Osinbajo continuing through 2019, Tinubu, in the statement issued by his media office, said the present administration was making progress despite challenges supposedly accumulated during what he called the years of the locust when the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, held sway in government.

The statement reads: “There is no empirical or logical basis for this mischievously speculative story.

Is it even conceivable, as the story recklessly insinuates, that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would be considering returning to full church work rather than run with his boss, President Buhari for a second term if the latter so decides without as much as discussing such a sensitive issue with his party and with Asiwaju Tinubu?

In any case, is this story not entirely unwarranted and indefensible as the Buhari/Osinbajo ticket has an electoral mandate of four years out of which it has spent only over two years and a half years?

“This is clearly an attempt to distract the APC Federal Government from the yeoman’s job it has been doing in rescuing the country from the deep-rooted socio-economic, political, security and moral mess inherited from the PDP’s 16 years misrule of Nigeria, instigate crisis within the party, stoke dangerous embers of religious disaffection within the party and the country generally and stem the remarkable progress being made in the reinvention and revitalization of Nigeria.

“There is greater sanity, accountability and transparency in the management of the country’s finances.

The Boko Haram insurgency has been substantially contained.

We should not allow ourselves to be derailed from the job we are effectively undertaking in fulfilling our campaign promises anchored on the tripod of containing insecurity, taming the scourge of corruption and resuscitating the economy.

I’ll not distract Buhari, Osinbajo “The Buhari and Osinbajo-led Federal Government are deftly steering the country out of an economic recession that was the result of the ineptness of the PDP years of the locusts.

Asiwaju Tinubu will never support any attempt to distract Buhari and Osinbajo from the job they are passionately doing through the kind of false report carried by the The Sun.

In particular, this story does great injustice to Vice President Osinbajo.

Here is a man of the highest integrity, moral rectitude, amazing humility, high intellect and unimpeachable credibility. Here is a man of fierce loyalty and absolute trustworthiness who will never do anything in word, thought or deed to undermine his boss.

”His unquestionable dependability and indisputable fidelity to his oath of office were demonstrated beyond question by his honourable conduct during the President’s medical vacation.

“Asiwaju Tinubu and the people of the South West have absolute confidence and are exceedingly proud of the excellent job Professor Osinbajo is doing as Vice President of Nigeria.”
