PMB leaves for AU summit in Addis Ababa

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate at the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

The president left the Presidential Villa, Abuja, via the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport for Addis Ababa two hours after observing the weekly Friday’s Juma’at prayer.

The President alongside with hundreds of other Muslim faithful performed the two Raka’at Juma’at prayer at the Aso Rock Mosque.

Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, had on Jan. 25, in a statement disclosed that the highlight of the President’s engagements during the visit would be his statements under the historic theme for the AU Summit, namely: “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.”

“This is the first time in the 54-year history of the AU that anti-corruption will be made a theme of the gathering of the regional leaders,’’ the statement said.

It would be recalled that, on July 4, 2017, during the 29th Session of the AU, African leaders unanimously endorsed President Buhari to champion the fight against corruption on the continent.

The endorsement was in recognition of his personal commitment and widely acclaimed anti-graft drive at the domestic level.

On July 25, 2017, the President, in a letter to President Alpha Conde of Guinea, who is also the out-going AU Chairperson, formally accepted his nomination to lead members of the AU on this crucial crusade against a veritable socio-economic vice that is anti-development.

While thanking his colleagues for the honour, Buhari reiterated his “commitment to contribute towards our collective efforts to strengthen good governance and development on the continent.’’

Adesina said that apart from anti-corruption, other issues lined for consideration by African leaders and their delegations would include peace and security (transnational terrorism). institutional reforms of the continental body and free movement of persons.

Others are climate change, trade; aviation, education, gender and development.

He said President Buhari would also hold bilateral meetings with some of his colleagues on issues of common interests.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Danbazau and the Minister of State (Aviation), Hadi Sirika, are in the President’s delegation to the summit.

Others are the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, and the Ag. Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu.

PMB not thinking of 2019 election

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is focused on delivering on promises made for his current term rather than thinking about the next election, his vice president said on Thursday.

Buhari, 75, has not publicly said whether he will contest the February 2019 election. Political insiders have privately questioned his willingness or ability to keep the top job after he spent much of the past year in Britain being treated for an undisclosed ailment that left him visibly weakened.

But Communications Minister Adebayo Sh!ttu, who played a prominent role in Buhari’s 2015 campaign, has said he would chair a group to support the re-election of the president and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Osinbajo, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, said: “The president is focused on this term. He wants to ensure that he delivers on the promises that were made. He is not talking about 2019.”

In an interview with CNBC, Osinbajo outlined a number of road and rail projects which the administration is working on and a social program to support the unemployed in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation.

In 2015, Buhari rode a wave of resentment against President Goodluck Jonathan over endemic government corruption, a struggling economy and a failure to defeat the Islamist Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, but now much of public opinion has turned against him.

In a blow to the president, Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and Buhari ally, quit the ruling All Progressives Congress and said he was prepared to run in 2019. Last month he joined the opposition People’s Democratic Party.

Obasanjo letter not strong enough to weaken PMB chances come 2019

A Serving Senator, Ali Wakili has weighed in Ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo's letter to President Muhammadu Buhari criticizing his performance in governing Nigeria.

Wakili believes that the letter is not powerful enough to weaken President Buhari's support base for the 2019 Elections. Wakili, a retired customs officer and chairman of the Senate committee on poverty alleviation, made this statement on Thursday.

He disclosed that no one could change the mind of Northerners on Buhari;

"Unfortunately for him, he cannot change the minds of average northerners on President Buhari. There is no candidate in the North that can defeat Buhari. He (Obasanjo) can only whittle down a little bit of his support base,"

Wakili opined that Obasanjo should have contacted Buhari in private about the issues he highlighted in the controversial 13-page letter, adding that the president's second term bid should be left to the masses.

IPOB will never give up fight for succession- spokesperson Emma powerful

For some years now, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been on the forefront in the struggle for the creation of a sovereign state.

With the absence of Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, during the time of Operation Python Dance, as well as the branding of the group as a terrorist organization, many believe the end is near for the group.

But in this email interview with TheCable, Emma Powerful, spokesman of IPOB, said contrary to such belief, the group is more formidable now than it has ever been.

He also spoke on a variety of issues including what has become of IPOB in Kanu’s absence, if the group would accept an option to dialogue with the federal government, the newly launched Hausa radio service as well as what a sovereign state of Biafra will look like.

TheCable: Some people find it difficult to believe that IPOB leaders do not know where Nnamdi Kanu is, can you convince us that you do not know Kanu’s whereabouts?

Powerful: Those that find it difficult to believe that the leadership of IPOB does not know where our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is are the same people that feign ignorance of the fact that the army invaded his residence. They are the same people that failed to hear Defence Minister General Mansur Dan Ali confirm on Channels TV during an interview that Nigerian government sent soldiers to invade the home of our leader and to capture him. Every right-thinking person knows the army went to kill Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on the 14th of September 2017 because there can never be any other plausible explanation as to why the army will truncate an ongoing judicial process by doing the work of the police. The question all right-thinking people should ask the attorney-general of the federation (AGF) is this; is it the duty of the army to be running round in armoured tanks looking for the enemies of Buhari to arrest? Nigerian Army, for those who might still be feigning ignorance of the fact, does not have the constitutional right to arrest anybody. Whenever soldiers arrest and molest people, as they normally do in Nigeria, they are breaking the law. That is what the Abdulsalami Abubakar 1999 Constitution says. But in Nigeria, law enforcement agencies and even the law courts don’t know what the constitution says. They are ignorant of their own laws. Those that invaded our leader’s residence went there to kill him his family and parents, or else they would have waited for him to appear in court on the 17th of October 2017. Buratai and his army are in the best position to answer any question regarding the whereabouts of our leader, especially at this time everybody, including non-Biafrans, are missing his inspirational leadership.

TheCable: Since the Python Dance operation, not much has been heard of the group regarding the Biafra agitation, does this mean the government has succeeded in weakening IPOB?

Powerful: Where did this patently false impression come from that IPOB has been weakened? Weakened in what way? If the media fails to carry to our news to your audience, then the “misleading” narrative peddled by Lai Mohammed and Nnia Nwodo that IPOB has been weakened, may be sustained in the minds of the gullible. But the truth remains that IPOB is more formidable now than ever. Despite the draconian and brutal crackdown on us, we have continued to hold rallies and protests. New IPOB family units are springing up all over the world. We successfully rallied in Onitsha before the successful boycott of Anambra governorship election. We also rallied in Aba on January 20, 2018 in remembrance of those killed last year during President Trump’s inauguration rally in Igweocha. Indiscriminate arrest, illegal detention and harassment of IPOB members have continued unabated. We stopped the treacherous Ohaneze Ndigbo leadership led by Nnia Nwodo in Lagos and also at Enugu during the ‘Handshake across the Niger’ event. Nobody born of a woman can weaken IPOB.

TheCable: Can you tell us the main idea behind the launch of Hausa radio service, do you think the government will let the station fly?

Powerful: Hausa Service of Radio Nigeria, mind you not Radio Biafra, was launched in response to the failed attempt by the Department of State Service (DSS) to infiltrate and destroy IPOB from within. The Nigerian government created a parallel radio station which we have since renamed Radio Buhari International to reflect its true ownership. They proceeded to launch another radio on a shortwave frequency with our sacred name. Both stations are based in the US. They named a non-existent person the leader of the great IPOB and claimed our leader and founder Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been replaced by this nonentity. It was at this point we decided late last year to launch a Hausa language service to take our unique enlightenment to oppressed ethnic minorities in the north because no enlightened society can swallow such junk. There is quality information deficit across the north which this Hausa radio service run by IPOB will address.

TheCable: While some of your followers and members have welcomed the launch of a Hausa radio service, some Nigerians see it as a coy to gain the sympathy of the north. Why the choice of Hausa when there are other languages around the south-east? Why not any language from the south-south?

Powerful: We chose the Hausa language because the majority of those at the receiving end of the falsehood propagated by the cabals in the north are their fellow core northerners. Educating the down-trodden masses of the north to understand the evil being committed in their name is important the most important assignment today. We are convinced that mass illiteracy and lack of access to unbiased information is the reason why a majority of Hausa Fulani people live in abject poverty and ignorance while their ruling class loot and accumulate all the wealth accruing to them.

TheCable: IPOB failed in its bid to stop last year’s governorship election in Anambra, what are your plans for the 2019 general election?

Powerful: Who told you IPOB failed in our bid to stop the elections in Anambra state? We successfully boycotted the elections as a prelude to what the world will witness come 2019. Less than 1% of eligible voters bothered to turn up to vote. That was the reason INEC spent days doing their best to bump up the figures to a respectable level. This, they succeeded in doing because the Abuja anointed politicians don’t want the world to know that power has slipped from them back into the hands of the masses. They don’t want the world to know how potent IPOB is but we know that they know. We have variously challenged INEC to publish the original result sheets collated from polling stations around the state to prove that less than 1% voted but to no avail. Go around Anambra state today and hear people testify that elections were totally boycotted. Where INEC got the figures they announced, only them can say. Election rigging, manipulation of results and inflation of voter figures is nothing new in Nigeria. They are panicking already because we have demonstrated that our people listen to IPOB and no other. 2019 will be a year to remember because, in so far as Biafraland is concerned, there will be no voting.

TheCable: Is IPOB willing to come to the negotiation table if the federal government invites it for dialogue?

Powerful: The answer is no, because Nigeria is not yet civilised enough to understand what dialogue means, neither are they known for keeping to the terms of any agreement reached. Name one agreement Nigeria entered into that ran its course. They think we are for settlement, how mistaken they are. We would only consider meeting them through a third party or mediator. History tells us that all conflicts end up on the conference table. Bearing this in mind, we would be willing to discuss with civilised sensible parties on how best to speedily facilitate the peaceful dissolution of Nigeria. Nigeria’s condition is a condition that is clearly unsustainable. The best way to go is referendum.

TheCable. Will an Igbo presidency in 2019 make IPOB back down on its quest for a sovereign state of Biafra?

Powerful: Nothing can make IPOB back down from this divine quest to restore the lost sovereignty of Biafra. Only the will of the people, clearly expressed during a referendum. We hear Nnia Nwodo, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Igbo governors and Abuja based errand boys, we ignorantly refer to as politicians or elite, tell us south-east and south-south do not want Biafra, which is a lie. There is only one way to establish the truth and settle this matter once and for all time. That is referendum. If we lose in a referendum, we stop the agitation for Biafra same day. The will of the people is what must prevail under this and every circumstance.

TheCable: Many of those who do not support your ideology have expressed dissatisfaction over what they describe as your violent approach — something very different from the method Odumegwu Ojukwu adopted while on the struggle for Biafra. What do you have to say?

Powerful: It is very sad and unfortunate that people don’t know the meaning of the phrase ‘violent approach’ as you put it. Violence doesn’t need dressing up in convoluted grammar because a situation is either violent or it is not. Those people peddling the myth that IPOB preach violence are the same Abuja rent boys and slaves. They will do and say anything to please their masters in order to hold on to political power and privilege. The same way Britain imposed unwanted corrupt men as warrant chiefs across Biafraland during the colonial era to their purpose is exactly the template the north adopted in the aftermath of the civil war to dominate, control and subjugate Igbo land and the rest of Biafraland. Have you heard of any emir, sultan, governor or politician from the north condemn herdsmen who are actively killing people on a daily basis? You know the answer to that? Only in Igbo land will a washed out politician beholden to Abuja for his dear life, rise to the position of a leader. No other society will accept such anomaly. IPOB is not violent and we don’t intend to pick up arms anytime soon, when we do, the world will know.

TheCable. You have other groups also agitating for Biafra, among which MASSOB is also included. Why can’t pro-Biafra agitators come under one umbrella and form a major front?

Powerful: This is another misconception I must correct now. All genuine groups agitating for Biafra restoration came together, when our leader was released from illegal detention early last year, to declare unanimously that he is the undisputed leader and arrowhead of the new agitation for Biafra restoration. IPOB cannot stop DSS or Lai Mohammed’s ministry of information from setting up a new Biafra group on a daily basis if they so choose. There is biting hunger and poverty in the land, so there will be regular supply of hungry people willing to accept pittance, for sake of preservation, to answer a pro-Biafra group. Groups come and go but IPOB remains. In as much this dispensation of our agitation for a sovereign Biafra is concerned, there is only one leader, Nnamdi Kanu and one organisation, IPOB, that resonates around the world. We remain without doubt the most organised and most potent freedom fighting outfit on this earth bar none.

TheCable: If Biafra comes to fruition today, how does IPOB want it run? Will it be a democratic nation? What is the IPOB idea of a sovereign state of Biafra?

Powerful: Biafra will be an open transparent society where laws protecting individual rights and freedoms will form the bedrock or foundation upon which the nation rests. Every political process will be democratised, from the election of the president, prime minister, members of parliament to district judges and police chiefs. There will be no siren escort for political office holders because all men will be genuinely equal before the law. It will become a criminal offence for any law enforcement officer to arrest a citizen without valid reason that can stand up to scrutiny on a court of law. Nobody will be prosecuted or persecuted for anything they say. There will be absolute freedom of speech. If the prime minister feels hurt by what is written against her or him, they should head to the courts and bring a libel suit, rather than telling the police chief or IG to arrest the person. The police in Biafra will not be routinely armed and on no account must the army be mobilised to do police work. Any army officer seen on the street with his uniform will be arrested, court-martialed and dismissed unless the country is at war. Basically, Biafra will be the complete opposite of Nigeria.

Anambra lawyer slumps, dies inside courtroom

A community in Umuchu town in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State has been thrown into mourning after one of their prominent lawyers, Barrister Solomon Uzoigwe slumped and died in a court room during trial over a land matter.

This caused pandemonium inside the court room as the lawyers who were present in the court ran helter skelter, abandoned him on the floor and fled.

Sephoranews.com reports that the incident happened on Wednesday within the premises of Onitsha High Court where the late Uzoigwe had gone to defend a matter against the advice of his wife.

It was gathered that the late Uzoigwe had gone to court to defend a matter but before the trial date, he suddenly fell sick. Despite his condition, he rejected his wife’s advice to rest and face his medication, went to the court where he eventually collapsed and died.

The 41-year old lawyer who got married recently, had only a kid before he died. He was said to have slumped in the court room and was later rushed to several hospitals in the city but it was already late as doctors only confirmed him dead.

His death has thrown the NBA Onitsha branch into mourning as some of the lawyers expressed shock and confessed that they have never witnessed such incident in recent times in the court premises.

The corpse has been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary for autopsy report before he will be buried in his village in Ibughubu in Umuchu town Aguata Local Government Area in Anambra State.

What would have caused the death of the deceased was not known because the autopsy report was not yet ready.

However, the late Uzoigwe was known for handling briefs especially on land matters and family disputes that had set brothers against themselves in his community and beyond for several years.

It was gathered that some of his senior colleagues had cautioned him against such briefs but he did not listen because of the huge money involved in such cases. Some attributed his sudden death to diabolical powers due to the kind of briefs he was handling in courts which were described as sensitive matters.

The late Solomon’s father, Pa Raphael Uzoigwe was a well known businessman and a real estate mogul that had over 100 houses beside hotels in Onitsha and other cities in the South East. He had six wives and the late Solomon was the second son among all the children Pa Uzoigwe had from his wives.

The late Uzoigwe will also be remembered for his contribution to his community and because of his commitment to the development of his community, he was appointed their legal adviser until he died.

No date has been fixed for his burial.

Pence announces US embassy to open in Jerusalem 'before end of next year'

The US will open its embassy in Jerusalem "before the end of next year," US Vice President Mike Pence said Monday in the Israeli parliament, where he reiterated the city was "the capital of the state of Israel."

Pence is the most senior US official to visit Jerusalem since President Donald Trump's announcement last month that his government recognized the city as Israel's capital and would move its embassy there, upending seven decades of US policy on the issue.

Both Israelis and Palestinians consider Jerusalem as their capital.

At the Knesset, Pence said it was thanks to Trump that "the alliance between our two countries has never been stronger, and the friendship between our peoples has never been deeper -- and I am here to convey a simple message from the hearts of the American people. America stands with Israel."

"We stand with Israel because your cause is our cause, your values are our values, and your fight is our fight."

Pence was earlier given a warm welcome to the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, greeted by an honor guard as the US national anthem played.

He said he was "hopeful that we are at the dawn of a new era, of renewed discussions to achieve a peaceful resolution to the decades-long conflict that has affected this region."

He added that Trump's December 6 announcement "would create an opportunity to move on in good-faith negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority."

Welcoming his visitor, Netanyahu said: "Mr. Vice President, I have had the privilege over the years of standing here with hundreds of world leaders and welcome them, all of them, to Israel's capital, Jerusalem. This is the first time that I am standing when both leaders can say those words: 'Israel's capital Jerusalem."'

When asked whether the US embassy could be moved to Jerusalem by next year, Netanyahu grinned and quipped that it could be "by next week."
When asked if he was serious, he responded: "No. But we want to do it."

Arab-Israelis to boycott Pence speech

Pence is due to give remarks in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, later Monday. A member of the Knesset, Ayman Odeh, said that he and other Arab-Israeli lawmakers would boycott the speech.

"In response to voices that are against our decision, we will not be silent about the speech made by a dangerous racist whose whole reason for being here is in order to damage any chance of peace," he wrote Saturday on Twitter, announcing the boycott.

On Monday, he wrote, his position was unchanged, calling Pence "a dangerous man with a messianic vision" sent by "an even more dangerous man, a political pyromaniac, a racist and interferer."

The United States Congress in 1995 passed a law requiring the US to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. But all US presidents before Trump have resisted acting on the law, signing a waiver in the national interest.

At the time of his announcement last month, Trump denied he was reversing US policy and reaffirmed the US' commitment to helping Israelis and Palestinians reach a peace agreement.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has repeatedly condemned and rejected Trump's decision, saying, among other things, that it would aid extremist organizations to wage holy wars.

BREAKING: George Weah sworn in as President of Liberia

Football star George Weah was sworn in as President of Liberia Monday, in the country's first democratic transfer of power for more than 70 years.

Weah, a decorated football star, took over from Africa's first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Liberians of all ages formed long lines outside Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, near the capital, Monrovia, to watch Weah's inauguration.

"I have spent my life in stadiums but I've never felt like this," Weah said in his inaugural address, AFP reported.

Weah, 51, won more than 60% of the votes and beat incumbent Vice-President, Joseph Boakai, in a runoff election on December 26.

The short ceremony was witnessed by African heads of state and dignitaries from Senegal, Mali, Ghana and Nigeria.

Former Chelsea soccer star Didier Drogba also attended the ceremony.

Weah won the first round in October with 38.4% of the vote, while Boakai received 28.8%, the National Elections Commission said.

Because neither candidate garnered more than 50% of the vote, a runoff was initially scheduled for November 7.

But claims of fraud and "gross irregularities" filed by Boakai's party and a smaller party delayed the vote. Those complaints were dismissed and a December runoff was set.

The West African nation of 4.6 million people has been ravaged by civil war, the Ebola virus and corruption and hasn't had a democratic transfer of power since 1944.

After Sirleaf took office in January 2006 as Liberia's first elected female President, she oversaw years of peace and stability despite festering problems and challenges.

What Manchester United great Sir Alex Ferguson said about Alexis Sanchez

Sir Alex Ferguson tried and failed to sign one Chile international in Marcelo Salas back in 1998 and tried and failed to sign his compatriot 13 years later; Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez is on the verge of completing his move to Manchester United, having undergone a medicayl at the club's Carrington training complex and posed for official photographs.

The 29-year-old is set to become the first Chilean to play for the club after Angelo Henriquez, Ferguson's penultimate signing, was restricted to a couple of cameos in friendlies.

Ferguson was an admirer of Sanchez when he was at Udinese. Sanchez joined the Italian club in 2006 but not break into the first-team until two years later, having returned to South America for loan spells with Chilean outfit Colo-Colo and River Plate in Argentina.

Sanchez surpassed Salas and his former international strike partner Ivan Zamorano by scoring four goals in a single Serie A match as Udinese whipped Palermo 7-0. Salas won the Scudetto with Lazio and Juventus while Zamorano was a prolific striker at Internazionale.

United were heavily linked with a move for Sanchez in the 2011 summer transfer window, particularly after Ferguson eulogised the then-22-year-old in September 2010.

"We have looked at Sanchez and he has impressed us, as have other players," Ferguson was quoted as saying by the News of the World in 2010. "He has had very good games and is an interesting project.

"We have gathered some background, as with other footballers at his level, but nothing more than this for the moment.

"We have watched some Chileans in the past. The most interesting case was that of Salas, who had a brilliant World Cup [at France '98] but he was at Lazio.

"We would have liked to have had him."

United and City both made contact with Sanchez's representatives six-and-a-half years ago but he joined Pep Guardiola's Barcelona for €26million after United bought Ashley Young.

Sanchez seemed set to reunite with Guardiola at City this year before United gazumped the Premier League leaders earlier this month.

Health status may determine Buhari’s 2019 bid

The state of President Muhammadu Buhari’s health could determine whether he seeks re-election in 2019 or not.

His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, made the disclosure during an interview in Abuja.

Concerns about the President’s health reached a climax, last year, during his almost four month’s medical trip abroad, amid rumours the worst might have happened.

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, who formed the arrowhead of criticisms against the official secrecy surrounding the matter had urged the President to stand down.

“This country deserves a very healthy person. The office of the president is not for a sick man. The President is tired and should be allowed to resign and go and rest,” Fayose said.

He added: “You don’t have to be president at all costs when you are tired. You go home. I don’t want to talk about 2019. But I want to tell you that Nigeria needs a president that is agile, strong. The job is too much for an individual that does not have what it takes. It is common saying that health is wealth. Everything is about health.”

Reiterating similar maxim, Adesina noted: “Health is wealth. ‎The President is not a frivolous person. If he thinks that his health cannot carry anything, he will not do it. So, of course, his health will matter a lot. It will be very important. But we need to give glory to God for the way he is now.”

The spokesman was, however, optimistic. According to him, “Everyday you see the President, you see a glow about him. You see freshness about him. I think he’s even in a better state than when he came in 2015. It’s all to the glory of God. So, once he assesses that his health can carry it, there’s nothing wrong if he steps into the fray. But he has the final decision.”

Adesina repeated Buhari’s commitment to leaving a legacy of non-interference in the outcome of elections conducted by the country’s umpire. “If it is the only thing he does, he wants to give free and fair elections to the country; elections that are acceptable,” he said.

He cited elections conducted under the present administration and won by the opposition, noting that things could have gone differently had the governing party chosen to wield federal might.

“You would have noticed that since this government came, there have been elections the All Progressives Congress (APC) didn’t have to win. It was not like that in the past when a certain party was in power. They won all the elections held in states.

“But you saw Anambra. Just this weekend, you saw a senatorial election there. Some months ago, in November, you saw the governorship election. If APC had wanted to overrun Anambra using federal might, it would have done so and would have won.

“Election were held in Bayelsa under this administration. APC didn’t do it. Ondo, APC won fair and square. Kogi, it won fair and square. Where APC wins, it wins. Where it loses, it loses. That’s the attitude of the President. Your party doesn’t have to win by hook or crook. So, he says if it is the last thing he does, he will leave free and fair elections for Nigeria. And that is happening.”

Buhari has made gains and a second term would provide an opportunity for consolidation, said Adesina. “The things he has done are apparent. Despite the challenges of the moment, you can’t rule out what he has done in security. The economy went into recession, stayed there just for one year. It has come out and the indices are good. Even the World Bank has projected 2.5 per cent growth for Nigeria this year.”

The spokesman insisted: “We have to wait until he blows the whistle. You can’t start a race until the whistle is blown. So, when he blows the whistle and says, ‘Yes, this is my ambition,’ then the race starts.”

Government uncovers Islamic State network in Nigeria

A group, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), is operational in North Central and South South Nigeria. It deploys foreign terrorists that unleash mayhem on communities, with a view to exacerbating ethnic and religious tensions.

This disclosure was made in a report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The report was described as the result of findings by security operatives, including the Department of State Services (DSS).

A presidency source, at the weekend, said the discovery of the ISWA network followed the arrest of suspected attackers consisting of Fulani herdsmen, government-sponsored militias, militants and other miscreants in Benue State.

The source noted that many of the persons in custody spoke only the French language, unable to communicate in any of the Nigerian dialects.

This is the first time security officials have confirmed the activities of ISWA.

The source disclosed that a “good number” of the terrorists have been arrested, not only in the Benue valley, but also in towns in Edo State, specifically Akoko-Edo, Okpella and Benin, and Okene, in Kogi State.

“It is understood that the cell, which has members in different parts of the country, concentrates on recruiting young men to fight for the Islamic State in West Africa by unleashing cold-blooded murder on innocent citizens.

“There was intelligence that they planned several attacks, here, before and during Christmas and New Year. Their bombing targets included fuel depots, foreign missions, police and military establishments.

“Their network is very wide. So much was achieved by the DSS, which made a significant number of arrests in the last two months that helped preempt the attacks. This saved Nigeria from the spate of major terrorist attacks witnessed elsewhere, syndicated by ISIS worldwide,” the source said.

The source added: “We are learning more and more about this complex and sophisticated network. This is the main reason the secret service is not parading those suspects so far arrested. It has become clear to us now that the challenge facing this country is a serious one.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed that Buhari has been receiving “report upon report on the situation in Benue and other states”.

He, however, said he had not been briefed on any of the reports.

This is coming barely three days after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday, inaugurated the Sanctions Committee charged with tracking and freezing funds for terrorist groups in Nigeria.

The committee, headed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, consists of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; National Security Adviser, Babagana Mongunu; Director-General of DSS, Lawan Daura; and Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

Also included are Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele; Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; Director General of the National Intelligence Agency; and the Director General, Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit.

In Taraba State, meanwhile, a helicopter allegedly packed with arms and ammunition was said to have made a stop at Jibu village, Ibi Local Government Area.

In a statement, yesterday, spokesman for the state governor, Bala Dan-Abu, said the incident might be a plot to arm a militia preparing to attack communities in the state.

He said a similar sighting preceded an attack in Agatu last year and called on security agencies to unravel the mystery behind the craft.

Member representing the area in the state House of Assembly, Josiah Aji, said he was notified of the development, adding that the council chairman and relevant agencies have been alerted.

Some residents of the area told The Guardian via phone that armed security operatives have been deployed to investigate the matter.

Police spokesman, David Misal, however, described the report as a mere rumour.

But it was real in Ondo State yesterday when suspected herdsmen burnt down the farm of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae. And in neighbouring Ekiti, Governor Ayodele Fayose, warned the leader of Fulani herdsmen, Muhammed Abashe, that he would be held responsible for any further attack in the state.

The governor was reacting to the recent killing by suspected herders of a Tiv woman at Orin Ekiti.

Fayose said Abashe failed to provide leadership by not stopping his kinsmen from destroying farms and attacking residents at the slightest provocation.

“If you still want to stay among us, you must accept the responsibility of ensuring that none of our peoples’ farms is destroyed by herdsmen any longer. None of our people must be killed by your men. If any killing or destruction of the farms of our people occurs again in that area, I will ensure that I use the law to fight you. This is the last warning I am giving you,” said Fayose.

Match Update: Burnley 0 Manchester United 1

Manchester United secured three points from a tight affair at Burnley, thanks to Anthony Martial's winner, as Jose Mourinho's men maintained our good form in 2018 with another victory and clean sheet.

Despite a positive opening, the Reds endured a largely unproductive first half as the opening 45 minutes yielded precious few efforts on goal for either side. Paul Pogba was at the heart of most of anything positive and hooked a volley over the top from an Ashley Young pass when offered a rare sight of Nick Pope's goal.

The Clarets looked capable of producing moments of danger from set-pieces with James Tarkowski left worryingly clear to waste a headed chance from a free-kick and Ben Mee also meeting a corner with no real reward.

Romelu Lukaku did well when involved, even if he was having to drop deep, but Pope remained untroubled for the entire half. Young supplied some class when a neat trick allowed him to get past Johann Berg Gudmundsson and ex-Red Phil Bardsley, only to bend his attempt the wrong side of the far post.

Martial fired well wide after a link-up with Pogba in stoppage time to suggest better would follow the break from United. Indeed, that was case as Jose's teamtalk had the desired impact.

Nine minutes into the second half, the decisive moment arrived. Lukaku showed great perseverance in winning the ball and advancing forward to spot Martial in space with an inviting pass. Martial deceived Pope with a clinical finish that crashed home off the underside of the bar in front of the delighted travelling fans.

Burnley's response was a good one, with Gudmundsson hitting the top of the bar from a free-kick in a promising position just outside the box. With the Clarets fans optimistically appealing for every decision, including a shout for handball by Chris Smalling when it appeared to hit his chest, it was never going to be an easy ride for the Reds.

David De Gea helped over a Mee header and a dangerous centre by Gudmundsson clipped off Smalling with the visitors at full stretch. United had chances to add a second but, too often, shots were delayed by the likes of Lukaku, Pogba and Jesse Lingard and desperate blocks were made.

Ashley Barnes and substitute Sam Vokes nodded headers off target but Pope was the busier of the keepers late on, with a one-handed stop to deny Martial a second. In five minutes of stoppage time, Vokes sent another effort over the bar as the Reds closed the game out.

Armed Fulani-herdsmen

He lamented that the  killings were gradually leading to a systematic division of the nation. Mourinho: Luke is one of the best

Jose Mourinho feels there are few better left-backs around at the moment than Luke Shaw and he believes the Manchester United defender has made great strides forward in recent weeks.

The 22-year-old has been a consistent performer of late, starting the Reds’ last five matches and featuring in eight of the last 11 games in all competitions.

Ashley Young is available for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Burnley after serving a three-game suspension and the boss faces a tough decision over who to play in the position at Turf Moor as he feels the in-form Shaw has played “very well” during his string of starts.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference at the Aon Training Complex on Friday, Mourinho said of Shaw: “Luke [has done] very well. He was already improving and playing well when I started playing him after that long spell without minutes.

“I remember the first time he played [in the] Champions League [against CSKA Moscow] he was coming step by step and now, with a good run of matches and also with continuity and playing like he did, for example against Everton [on New Year's Day] two days after a previous match [against Southampton].

“[He was] good, solid, physically much better, mentally much stronger, tactically understanding much better the game and what we need from him in the different phases and circumstances. I'm really happy. You like the transfer market and I can say in this moment, I don’t see many left-backs better than Luke Shaw.”

Match preview: Burnley v Manchester United

United have begun the new year in the best possible way, with three wins from three games in all competitions without conceding a goal. The Reds will look to continue our perfect record in 2018 so far, when making the relatively short trip to East Lancashire to face Burnley. The Clarets have been the Premier League’s surprise package this season but have experienced a dip in form recently.

Although a tough test is still in prospect at Turf Moor, Jose Mourinho’s men head into the game on the back of Monday’s convincing 3-0 win over Stoke City and must be confident of recording a third successive league win while extending our unbeaten run in the top flight to eight games.

Is it on TV? Saturday’s game will kick-off at 15:00 GMT and will, therefore, not be broadcast live in the UK. However, subscribers to MUTV on Sky or Virgin Media, the club’s MUTV app or online at MUTV.com will be able to watch the build-up from 13:15 GMT on the Match Day show. You will also be able to listen to radio commentary of the game before watching it in full on Sunday at 18:00 GMT.

What’s the team news? Ashley Young could return after serving his three-match suspension but the boss confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that Daley Blind is ruled out with a little injury sustained in training. United's only other current absentees are captain Michael Carrick, defender Eric Bailly and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Carrick is edging closer to a return to action after an extended absence following a heart problem, while Bailly and Ibrahimovic could be back training by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Burnley are without former Reds Tom Heaton and Robbie Brady, left-back Stephen Ward, forward Jon Walters and top scorer Chris Wood through injury but Scott Arfield could return after three games out with a hamstring injury. On-loan Tottenham forward Georges-Kevin N'Koudou could be in line for his first start after making his debut as a substitute against Crystal Palace last weekend.

How have Burnley been doing? After comfortably avoiding relegation in their first season back in the top flight last term, Burnley have enjoyed a remarkable campaign so far under Sean Dyche and are comfortably in the top half of the table.

But despite boasting the third-best defensive record in the Premier League, the injury-hit Clarets have endured a poor run of form recently which has halted their momentum. The Lancashire side haven’t won in their last seven games since a 1-0 home victory over Stoke in mid-December, which briefly took them into the top four, and have lost all three of their matches in 2018 including a 1-0 reverse at a resurgent Crystal Palace last Saturday.

What happened in the previous meeting? United were frustrated but showed powers of recovery to come from two goals down and draw 2-2 with Burnley at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. Half-time substitute Jesse Lingard scored both goals, including a stoppage-time equaliser, after Ashley Barnes and Steven Defour had netted in the first half for the Clarets. The visitors' performance showed they are dangerous, despite the fact they haven't won in their last seven matches.

How is our record against them? We've previously met Burnley 125 times in all competitions, stretching back to 1892, winning on 59 occasions, but Saturday’s match will be only the eighth time we’ve locked horns with the Clarets in the Premier League. United have a strong record – winning three and drawing three, with the only defeat a 1-0 loss away from home in 2009 – while goals from Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial in a 2-0 win last April ensured our first Premier League victory at Turf Moor.

Strong at the back: United are yet to concede a goal in 2018 and have kept four clean sheets in a row. Ironically, Burnley were the last team to find the net against the Reds in the Boxing Day draw. Meanwhile, Monday’s shut-out against Stoke was David De Gea’s 13th in the Premier League this season – more than any other keeper – and the Spaniard hasn’t conceded on his previous two visits to Turf Moor.

Danger man: Paul Pogba put in another top performance during the comfortable victory over Stoke. A dominant and dynamic presence in midfield, the influential Frenchman has been named the club’s Man of the Match twice already in 2018 and has been our chief creator in recent weeks. Pogba set up the first-half goals for Antonio Valencia and Anthony Martial against the Potters, which took his tally of assists to nine in 13 Premier League games this season. He also has an impressive record of not being on the losing side for the Reds in 35 league games – since a defeat at Chelsea on 23 October 2016.

One to watch: An unsung hero, Johann Berg Gudmundsson has more than played his part in Burnley’s impressive season so far. A key member of the Iceland team which reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 and qualified for their first World Cup finals this summer, he creates lots of chances and has registered five assists in recent weeks. He also scored his second Burnley goal in their 2-1 home defeat by Liverpool on New Year’s Day and the United defence will have to keep a close eye on the former Charlton man.

Who’s the referee? Mike Dean will take charge of his third United game this season after handling our 4-0 home win over Crystal Palace in September and Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat at Bristol City. He will be assisted by Simon Long and Ian Hussin, with Mike Jones appointed as the fourth official.

Court ruling on IPOB as terrorist organisation denigration of judiciary—Ohanaeze

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court,  yesterday, declined to set-aside the order that designated the Indigeniuos People of Biafra, IPOB, as a terrorist organisation.

The court, in a ruling that was delivered by the Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdul Abdu-Kafarati, dismissed the application IPOB filed to challenge the September 20, 2017, order that outlawed its activities in Nigeria.

Justice Kafarati said he was persuaded by an affidavit evidence and exhibits the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami,   SAN, adduced before the court, which he said showed that existence of the IPOB constituted a threat to national security.

Though he acknowledged that every Nigerian citizen has the right to assemble freely and to form or belong to any association for the protection of his interests, Justice Kafarati however stressed that under  section 45 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, such right could be curtailed “in the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health”, as well as “for the purpose of protecting the rights and freedom of other persons”.

He further dismissed the argument of counsel to the IPOB, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, that the group, not being a registered entity in Nigeria, could not be validly sued by the Federal Government.

The court maintained that the fact that IPOB claimed that it was registered in so many countries outside Nigeria, did not exculpate it from legal liabilities if it was found to have by its activities, violated any law in Nigeria

“The question  is whether a foreigner in Nigeria is subject to Nigerian law? Can that foreigner be arrested and prosecuted in Nigeria? The answer is yes.

“It is therefore my considered view that the argument of Ejiofor has no basis. I hold that the applicant is subject to Nigerian law and courts”, the Judge added.

More so, he held that the proscription order he issued against IPOB in chambers was proper in law since it was based on an ex-parte motion that was anchored on provisions of the Terrorism Prevention Act, adding that the motion was backed with “Presidential approval.”

Consequently, it resolved all three issues that were formulated against the proscription order against the IPOB, and also awarded a cost of N500, 000 against the outlawed group.

Meanwhile, shortly after the judgment, IPOB’s lawyer, Ejiofor, vowed to take the case before the Court of Appeal.

Ejiofor decried that the Judge failed to consider fundamental issues that IPOB raised in its application.

IPOB  had asked the court to vacate the proscription order which it said was surreptitiously obtained by the AGF.

The court had in the ruling last year, declared as illegal, all activities of the IPOB, particularly in the South-east and South-South regions of the country.

It specifically restrained “any person or group of persons from participating in any of the group’s activities”.

However, the IPOB, in a motion it filed pursuant to Section 6(6) (1) of the 1999 constitution, as amended, maintained that the proscription order “was made without jurisdiction”, adding that it was “granted against an entity unknown to law.”

IPOB queried the legal validity of the order, saying there was “clear suppression and misrepresentation of facts,” in the affidavit evidence the AGF submitted, upon which the order was granted.

It argued that the proscription order was tantamount to declaring over 30 million Nigerians of Igbo extraction as terrorists.

Ruling, denigration of judiciary—Ohanaeze

In a related develpoment, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo in his reaction said:  “It is unfortunate that our courts are allowing themselves to be used for unlawful and political ends. IPOB has done nothing to qualify, as defined by international standards, to be called a terrorist organisation.

“Sadly, the Federal Attorney General in his parochialism, unmitigated bias and calumny has not found it necessary to classify Fulani herdsmen as terrorists inspite of their classification by the Global Terrorist Index as the fourth deadliest terrorist organization in the world.

“Ohanaeze frowns at this nepotism, this denigration of our judiciary and this stigmatization of our children.”

Similarly, another Igbo group, Aligbo Development Foundation, ADF, said the court decision sounded like a political statement.

President of ADF, Prof. Timothy Nwala said: “the declaration sounds like a political statement. Legal declarations are born out of sound logic. I doubt if there is any rational thought in this case.

“There was no rational basis for the court verdict. The world knows what they are doing. If Fulani Marauders are not terrorists, I wonder what the world would say.”

IPOB not terorist group—Survey

However, an air of disbelief and shock enveloped parts of Imo State yesterday, following the court judgment that confirmed Federal Government’s position that the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is a terrorist group.

People were seen in groups, discussing the development in hushed tones, as soon as the outcome of the judgment filtered into Owerri municipality.

Efforts made to get some government officials to speak on the issue failed, as they reasoned that “it is a very delicate national issue”.

However, some people who claimed to be IPOB loyalists said they were not surprised by the judgment of the court.

“What did you expect from the court controlled by the same government that called us a terrorist group? It is sheer irony that those who don’t carry firearms and don’t believe in wasting precious human lives are branded terrorists. This is Nigeria for you”, Ikechukwu Okam said.

According to Ikechukwu, “everything about Ndigbo must be treated like our views and aspirations don’t count”.

In her own opinion, Florence, a mother of three queried why the rampaging herdsmen that have killed several people, are still treated with kid gloves, while IPOB loyalists are branded terrorists.

“Go and tell government that they can kill the flesh but definitely not the spirit. Many souls may still be killed by the security agencies, but generations after us will continue from where we stopped”, Florence said.

Alexis Sanchez made Arsenal contract U-turn after Bayern Munich mauling

Alexis Sanchez made his decision not to sign a new long-term contract at Arsenal in February last year, according to reports.

The Chilean was planning to remain at the Emirates and had even gone as far as verbally agreeing to a new deal.

However, he is now on the verge of leaving with a move to Manchester United imminent.

The U-turn over his Arsenal future was made after last season’s mauling at the hands of Bayern Munich, claim the Daily Star.

The Gunners were smashed 5-1 in the Champions League Round of 16 clash at the Allianz Arena on February 15.

It’s suggested that game made Sanchez believe that Arsenal were unable to match his own ambitions and he would not commit his long-term future to the club.

Sanchez is expected to join Manchester United after the Red Devils agreed to make him the best paid player in the Premier League.

Speaking on Thursday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said it was ‘likely’ Sanchez would make the move in the next 24 hours.

‘It is likely to happen [in the next 24 hours], but any moment, any minutes things break down, that’s how the transfer market is. I’ve worked on transfers for 30 years.

‘So as long as it’s not over the line, we have to accept it can’t happen. These things are never guaranteed.’

Benue killings: Tiv group seeks arrest of perpetrators

Worried by the unending killings in Benue State by suspected Fulani herdsmen, an Abuja-based Tiv socio-cultural organization known as Swem Karagbe Club has added its voice to condemn the attacks.

The group said the recent attacks amount to attempts to annihilate the Tiv nation and forcefully acquire their God given resources. It vowed that any attempt to forcefully take over the ancestral homes of the Benue people will be vehemently resisted.

In a press release signed by the President-General, Emmanuel Ukan, KSJI and made available to Vanguard, the group also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to mobilize all the security apparatus of the state to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all the perpetrators of the heinous crime against the people of Benue State.

It further called on the authorities to prosecute the leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, who had sometime in 2017, threatened to invade the state after the signing into law of the State Anti Open-Grazing law by the Benue State Governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom.

The group said it is out to promote peaceful co-existence, culture and the development of the Tiv nation, but would not allow the lingering invasion and killings in the Benue valley to continue, describing it as a barbaric scheme and calculated strategy to overrun and enslave the un-armed citizens of the state.

“We condemn in strong terms the continuous unwarranted invasion, provocation and killings of the un-armed people of Benue State on their God given land, most especially the good people of Guma and Logo Local Government Areas, through a well-conceived and executed invasion, killings and destruction of properties by the Fulani herdsmen curiously over rights of the ancestral land of the people.

“We condemn in total, the docile, non-challant and uncaring attitude of the Federal authorities to forewarnings by the Governor of Benue State, arising from threats by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association to launch attacks against our people as no precautionary measures were put in place by the Federal Government,

Paving way for such threats to become real which has resulted to monumental loss of lives and properties by our people” “For now, ranching remains not only the best solution but the only option to the herdsmen-farmers’ crisis, hence we urge the Federal Government of Nigeria to learn from international best practices of animal husbandry even among our African countries like Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, etc. where ranching has been long entrenched.

Consequently, we urge the Federal security agencies to ensure the full implementation of the law in the State,” the statement said.

The group said it was disturbed by the slow pace of action and lack of political will by the President Buhari-led federal government to stem the tide, saying it behoves Buhari as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to live up to his oath of office by ensuring the security of lives and properties of all citizens, irrespective of partisan political persuasion and ethnicity.

While commending the Benue State Governor, Governor Samuel Ortom, for his doggedness, uprightness and for being a strong voice for the defenceless people of the State who have been subjected to neglect, untold hardship, raping, killings, maiming and the ensuing destruction of properties worth billions of naira, the group called on all prominent sons and daughters of the state to rally round and support the State Government by speaking out and working closely in unity to evolve sustainable strategies that will permanently overrun the activities of the herdsmen.
