Atiku Walks Out On Presidential Debate After Buhari's Absence

Presidential candidate of The People's Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar stormed out of the Presidential debate last night.

The debate which was organized by the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON) and Nigerian Election Debate Group (NEDG) was held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja with 5 Presidential Candidates being invited.

The 5 Candidates selected were :

President Muhammed Buhari (APC)
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (PDP)
Oby Ezekwesili (ACPN)
Fela Durotoye (ANN)
Kinsley Moghalu (YPP)

As expected, the audience were there to support and cheer for their candidates and the candidates were present at the venue with President Buhari and Atiku not participating.

ATIKU Abubakar who was in the US, flied into the country the same day because of the debate, came into the venue and after waiting for some time became furious that President Buhari had boycotted the event.

Atiku was seen in the candidate's reception room having a conversation with Kingsley Moghalu of YPP and was present as the Debate began but as he was about to be introduced into the podium, a note was sent to Mark Eddo the Anchor of the debate believed to be sent by Atiku, he went on to skip Atiku and introduced other candidates.

Exactly 25 minutes after the commencement of the debate, Atiku was seen leaving the venue with disappointment in his face over the absence of Buhari.

He later tweeted some statements and also an apology on his official twitter handle @atiku.

He said:

We came here for a Presidential debate, not a candidacy debate, and I, Atiku Abubakar cannot challenge or question an administration where the man at the helm of the affairs of the nation is not present to defend himself or his policies.

Afterall, you cannot shave a man's head in his absence. I do not believe in attacking a man who is NOT here to defend himself.
As a leader and former vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, let me first apologise to all Nigerians, my fellow candidates and the moderator for the APC Presidential Candidate’s absence in this debate. His non-appearance is a slight on ALL of us and our democracy.

With respect to my fellow candidates, Fela Durotoye, Oby Ezekwesili, Kingsley Moghalu & to moderator Mark Sugar & with apologies to Nigerians here & at home expecting an interesting debate, I regret I will not be able to go on with this debate due to President Buhari's absence.
I however challenge President Buhari to choose a date and time for a debate where he will be present and I will be there, hopefully with the other candidates as well.

Thank you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Atiku Abubakar
Muhammed Buhari on the other hand wasn't seen at the Venue and no press briefing has been issued by him or any member of the APC regarding his Absence.

With the absence of the two top runners in the election, the debate still went on as planned.
