Revealed: Women With More Births Have Low Risk Of Fibroid!!

Fibroid is non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can develop during a woman's childbearing years.

This is a common case in Nigeria as 100 thousand cases are reported yearly, this chronic ailment can last for years and even life time.

Dr Benjamin Olowojebutu, a surgeon has revealed that Women who give birth to numerous children have low risk of developing fibroid.

Olowojebutu, the founder of Benjamin Olowojebutu Foundation said this in a briefing held in Lagos recently.

He said that for women who started menstruating at a younger age than normal, a break in their menstrual cycles would be necessary to avoid developing fibroid.

“If a child starts menstruating at the age of 10, by the time she is 35 years-old and she has not given birth, it means that she has been bleeding for 25 years without a break. The longer you are menstruating, the more time you have to stimulate the oestrogen hormone to produce fibroid.
“Women who have many babies may not have fibroid. This is because there is usually a break. There is usually a two-year break: one year of pregnancy and another for breastfeeding. So, the oestrogen hormone cannot stimulate their wombs to grow the fibroids,."
He advised women to visit a doctor and get examined when they suspect that they might be having fibroids, instead of taking herbs.

“There are lots of fallacies and superstitious beliefs around fibroids. Some people say that you can take herbal medicine to shrink or pass out fibroids through the anus. This is what is killing many women today. Some women have been taking herbal drugs for many years and instead of shrinking the fibroid, it is getting bigger.
“We want to let people know that there is help for them through our foundation. If you are poor and you can’t afford surgery, just come to us and we will foot the bills,."
Olowojebutu said the foundation would ensure that 1,000 indigent women across the 36 states of the federation undergo fibroid surgeries free-of-charge in 2019.

“The goal of our foundation is to change the health care space with love and compassion. Our aim is to help 1,000 indigent patients suffering from fibroid, lipoma, breast lumps and hernia. We have just concluded the Ikorodu outreach where eight fibroid surgeries were carried out.”
