Man Utd closing in on two January transfers with Ed Woodward ready to save season

Manchester United are closing in on two January signings with Ed Woodward ready to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turn things around.
The Red Devils have endured a difficult campaign so far, winning two of their opening nine Premier League games but taking some solace in the Europa League, where they’ve amassed seven points from a possible nine.
And with United suffering, the Mirror claim United are closing in on the signing of Denis Zakaria.
Express Sport understands the first signing, however, is likely to be Mario Mandzukic.

The Juventus star is currently out in the cold over in Turin and is yet to make a single appearance this season.
It has been agreed with the Serie A giants that he will be allowed to depart when the transfer window reopens in January.
And United, it seems, is set to bring him to Old Trafford as their replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who left for Serie A giants Inter Milan back in the summer.
A second signing reportedly in the offing is Zakaria.
The midfielder has impressed for Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga this season, starring as they’ve surged to the top of the table.
Zakaria offers tenacity in the middle of the park and would be the ideal replacement for Ander Herrera, who departed the club on a free transfer back in the summer.

The 22-year-old has won 24 caps for Switzerland and could be available for £25m in January.
Whether United can force through both transfers to turn their season around, though, remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, former Red Devils midfielder Paul Scholes believes the club need three ‘special’ signings to be competitive again.
“It’s a team that really lacks creativity,” Scholes said on BT Sport.
“We’re lacking on a real No 10 I think, a player that can play passes through and is capable of scoring goals as well.
“Also maybe a patrolling midfield player who can set all the play up as well, take the ball off the back four and link it through to the forward.
“And I also think they’re desperate for a No 9, I don’t think they’re good enough in the forward areas.

“But it’s the start of Ole’s rebuild, he didn’t think [Romelu] Lukaku was good enough for that, he didn’t see a place for [Alexis] Sanchez so he’s got rid of them.
“And now over the next year or so he’s got to bring and really find players, special players, in those forward areas that can win games.
“When they go up against a Chelsea, who are very good in possession, [or] Manchester City and Liverpool who are very good in possession, I don’t think United are good enough to keep possession like those teams do.
“So I think that’s why counter-attacking on Sunday [against Liverpool], goals like this, probably suited them.
“It’s when you play your Crystal Palaces and your Newcastle when you have all the possession, do you have the players that are special enough in the forward areas to win games of football? And in the midfield areas?
