Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his wife’s 17-year-old niece in Abuja

A Nigerian civil worker has received a life imprisonment sentence after he was found guilty of raping a 17-year old girl who is his wife's niece at their residence in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

37-year-old Francis Yusuf Kyamang was arrested by operatives of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIPon the 13th of September 2019 although the case against him was officially filed on 11th December 2018 but was arrested after investigations were properly completed.

Stella Nezan who is the Head of Press and Public Relations Unit of NATIP said that Francis was arraigned before an FCT High Court Jabi- Court on January 28 and Justice Hassan Babangida presided over the hearing. He received his life sentence on January 28 2020.

She stated;
"It was an end of the road for an Abuja based Public Servant, Mr. Francis Yusuf Kyamang of SS Quarters, Jikwoyi, as a Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Jabi, has sentenced him to life imprisonment for raping his wife’s niece and further assaulted the victim after the abominable act,"
Reacting to the turn out of the case, Dame Julie Okah, the Director-General of NAPTIP commended the judge for the fair judgement and also praised the legal prosecuting team representing NATIP for professionally handling the case.

She said;
“I am particularly happy that justice has been adequately served in this matter. This will serve as a deterrent to other persons and potential rapists who take delight in defiling our children. Like I said recently, this year will be hot for rapists and human traffickers in the Country. We cannot afford to fold our hands while some unscrupulous persons continue to jeopardize the future of our children. They deserve protection and care rather sexual harassment. I specially appreciate the collaboration of all stakeholders in this case. With this development, his name will automatically feature in the newly launched Sexual Offender Register."
