A planned winter training camp expected to be held in Qatar by US men's football team has been cancelled amid growing tensions in the Middle East after an Iranian top general was assassinated by US forces.

In a statement released on Friday, US Soccer said;
"Due to the developing situation in the region, US Soccer has decided to postpone travelling to Qatar for the Men's National Team's scheduled January training camp".
The training camp which is meant to last for 20 days was scheduled to begin on Sunday 5th January at Doha's Aspire Academy in the Country's Capital.

The team would now hold this annual training in American soil, at the IMG Academy in Bradenton in Florida.

Coach of the US soccer team, Gregg Berhalter had called up 25 players for the trip to Doha, they were supposed to play closed-door games before going back to the US to play a match against Costa Rica in Carson, California by February.

That international friendly game will go ahead as planned, US Soccer said.
"We are working with the Qatar Football Association to find an opportunity in the near future for our team to experience Qatar's world-class facilities and hospitality".
