Read Full Gist: Naira Marley And Babantunde Fashola

Comic news rarely comes from the aviation industry, especially in Nigeria where long flight delays and cancellations are the regular headlines.
But that changed on Tuesday when a letter written by Dr Sam Iwuajoku, chief executive officer of  Executive Jets Services Limited, to the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, was reported by the media.
It was a letter of apology to the federal government by the aviation company for flying popular Afrobeats hip hop singer Naira Marley and his entourage to Abuja for a concert on June 12, in clear violation of the ban on domestic flights and interstate travel due to coronavirus pandemic.
A viral video of the crowded concert, which showed complete disregard for social distancing, had provoked outrage on social media with many calling for the arrest of the musician.
Sirika  was forced to address the issue on Monday during the regular Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 briefing in Abuja where he announced suspension of the flight company but also made excuses for it.
The minister said the approval given to the company was to “convey Hon Justice Adefope Okogie from Lagos to Abuja and back to Lagos, for an official assignment” but that did not take place because the Judge came with another flight.
But Sirika said the singer, whose real name is Azeez Fashola, had “deceived” the flight company so that he and his entourage could illegally fly to Abuja for a concert.
But it was Dr Iwuajoku who explained how his company was “deceived” the next day when he released his letter of apology. He confirmed his approval was to fly the Judge to Abuja and back to Lagos, but since she already left, the company decided to use the opportunity for another charter.
Part of the letter read: “So, on Saturday morning, my staff called and told me that they have a charter flight to Abuja and that the passengers were already at the lounge.
“As a rule, passengers’ manifest is always sent to me before any departure. When I went through the manifest and I saw Fashola Babatunde,” he stated, adding that he didn’t know they were a “bunch of useless people.” He apologized and said it would not happen again.
The aviation minister has not responded yet to the apology, and its possible he also enjoyed the humour and probably chuckled to himself: “These people are not serious, they think I don’t know what happened!”

I’m Not A Marlian-Fashola

The minister for works and housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, however, did not find the developments amusing. A press statement he issued in the wake of the controversy surrounding use of his name on an airline passenger manifest showed the minister was angry at the news.
Fashola is known for paying attention to details and any public information that tend to pass the wrong message would be shot down by him.
