Southwest APC hails Yakassai for supporting south for 2023 presidency

The southwest chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the statement by a prominent northern leader, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, calling for the 2023 presidency to be zoned to the south.

The Nation reports that the southwest APC commended Yakassai, saying the elder statesman was logical in his advocacy for the rotational presidency.

This was contained in a statement signed by the publicity secretary of the APC chapter, Karounwi Oladapo.

News Source gathers that Yakassai is a member of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Arewa Consultative Forum, an influential socio-political group in the north.

Yakassai had said: “The principle of zoning and rotation is very important in Nigerian politics, particularly as long as we are operating the presidential system of government.

The elder statesman said it will be inappropriate for only one region to attempt to run the presidency for more than eight years.

“So, in my opinion, it is incumbent on the APC to sponsor the next presidential candidate from the south,” he said.

Meanwhile, Babachir Lawal has lifted the lids on how Bola Tinubu helped President Muhammadu Buhari win the 2015 presidential election.

Speaking with The Punch, the former secretary to the government of the federation said Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state, packaged President Buhari for Nigerians before the 2015 election.

Lawal further revealed that the APC national leader was the strong force of financial support for Buhari, adding that he (Tinubu) was a colossus of south-west politics.

In another report, Yakubu Dogara, former speaker of the House of Representatives, has finally addressed the growing speculations surrounding his defection and the politics of 2023 presidency.

The lawmaker, in a statement by his media aide Turaki Hassan on Sunday, August 23, said his defection to the APC is not about his political ambition.

Dogara said he is, however, concerned about how to help "rebuild and reposition the APC in Bauchi state."
